On Saturday, Aug. 26, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors will be in Massachusetts to take on the Minutemen. An interesting stat I came across recently pertaining to both teams is that the Rainbow Warriors are well above .500 with an overall total record in college football of 524-391, while the Minutemen are near even, with an overall record in college football of 561-557.
Does that matter? Maybe not. The odds makers have this game near even, with the opening line at Hawaii -1, and it is going to -1.5 or -2 at some sportsbooks around town. The total opened at 64.5 and has gone down slightly, but not significantly. Only in Vegas, a total of 61.5 vs. 64.5 can be a big difference. Keep in mind, kickers matter.
Things to consider when looking to be on this game include the time travel, but then again, the game start is at 6 p.m., so the team might be well rested. Trends that might matter include Hawaii being 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games, 8-16 in its last 24 games, and the total has gone OVER in 4 of Hawaii’s last games. Massachusetts is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games, 1-8 SU in its last 9 games, and the total has gone over in 5 of its last 6 games.
Last year when these teams met one another the outcome was 46-40, with the UMass Minutemen on the losing end of the equation. Chances of it being another shootout again this year are likely. UMass will have several of its key players back in action, and there is a chance they might be able to stop the Rainbow Warrior’s offense from stacking up points, but sometimes history repeats itself. UMass will also have seven of its offensive starters from last year’s team. Is that a good thing?
The game looks to be one where choosing sides might be riskier than taking the Over, especially if you can grab it at 61.5. Sit back and enjoy, and be sure to take notes. College football is back, and paying attention to the early games will most likely help you predict winners this season!
