Some people think it all started back in 1919 when the Great Man o’ War got beat by a horse named Upset in the Sanford Memorial at Saratoga as the spa got the moniker “graveyard of champions.”

We do note the Great Man o’ War met Upset six more times and beat him all six. Many think the term upset originated after that race but it had been a term used in racing since back in 1877 referring to a surprising loss.

There were upsets galore this weekend in college football with the biggest coming here in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium as our not so “running Rebels” lost to Howard University from Washington, D.C., as a -45-point favorite, 43-40. What a bad mark on UNLV losing to 1-AA Howard but the Bison does have freshman QB Caylin Newton, who is Cam’s brother. Still, no excuses UNLV.

The Maryland Terrapins went into Austin and put it to the Longhorns, 51-41 as a +18-point dog. It was a bad week if you are a Texan, to say the least. Things will get better.

It doesn’t end there as Liberty University had to cancel classes after beating Baylor in Waco, Texas, 48-45 as a +33-point dog. The students at the Lynchburg, Va. university went wacko. It was not a good week if you are a Texan!

There were a few big line moves last week and most went down in a blaze of glory. One this bettor wrote about in last week’s column was Colorado, who opened as a -9-point favorite and went off as a -3.5 point chalk vs. Colorado State. The Buffaloes won 17-3 as the linesmakers had this one right on.

Miami Ohio opened as a +2-point dog and was bet like a good thing going off as a -3-point favorite vs. Marshall. The linesmakers had this right on as Marshall won 31-26.

A game this bettor played was UCLA, which opened as a -3.5 point favorite and was bet up to -6. The Bruins made a huge fourth quarter comeback scoring 28 unanswered points to win 45-44 vs. Texas A&M. Yes, it was not a good week for Texans but it will get better.

Now let us see if we can pluck a few winners this week in college football.

Saturday, Sept. 9

Wake Forest +1.5 at BC (no total): If you like defense you will really like this game. The BC defense has been ranked in the top 10 the last two years and should be right there again this year. In a real close game we will opt for the Eagles and under the total. BC/UNDER

Pittsburgh +19 at Penn St.: Normally would not want to lay this number in a game like this but after watching the Lions play and looking at Pitt needing to go into overtime to beat Youngstown State, 28-21, plus Penn State is a solid 10-0 ATS at home in this situation we will lay the -19. PENN ST.

Fresno St. +43 at Alabama: My buds think I am a glutton for punishment but again I will be betting against the Tide as they will be in no mood to crush the Bulldogs after a gutty effort last week vs. Florida State. The Tide has gone 0-5 ATS at home when coming off a non-conference game. We will take the huge spread as Saban will call off the dogs early. FRESNO ST.

Nebraska +9 at OREGON: Revenge is the name of this game as the Ducks lost to the Cornhuskers in Lincoln last year, 35-32. The Huskers were life and death last week to get by Arkansas State, 43-36 as -14-point chalk. Lay the points. OREGON

Auburn +7 at Clemson: One thing we do know for sure in this game is a Tiger will win. We think it will be the Auburn Tigers in a big revenge situation as they had Clemson by the tail last year but lost in a real battle, 19-13. In another real close game Auburn will get the money. The +7 looks large. AUBURN

Oklahoma +7.5 at Ohio State: My buds back in Columbus and Steubenville will not be talking to me after this selection but here we go. This game will set the stage for the rest of the year for both teams. In a must take situation the Sooners have had this game circled since last year’s humiliating 45-24 loss to the Buckeyes in Norman. We look for a high scoring game with both teams trading punches at the Horseshoe as two big time QB’s light up the scoreboard. OKLAHOMA +7.5/OVER

Memphis +3 at Central Florida: UCF was on my watch list last season and now with second-year head coach Scott Frost having his offense in high gear and a defense that was ranked No. 2 in the red zone we will be on the Knights. The host team in this series has gone 5-0 ATS the last five meetings. UCF

Last week: 3-4 (w/o Mon. game)
