Memorial Tournament Round 1 Leader Predictions

Viktor Hovland (+3000, DraftKings)

If it were not for the bunker swallowing his ball on the 16th in the PGA Championship, Hovland and Brooks Koepka would have gone down to the wire. Instead, a double bogey ruined his chances, and he scrapped together two birdies to finish T-2.

Still, Hovland has to feel really good about his performance and his play as of late. The 25-year-old has been money the entire season but is still looking for the first significant victory of his career. Prior to his T-2 finish at Oak Hill, Hovland finished seventh at the Masters, and he ranks fourth in strokes gained on approach shots in his last 24 rounds.

His approach shots will be important in the tournament, as he has always struggled with his short game. Muirfield Village is biased toward great ball strikers, which Hovland is. This is a challenging course, especially for those who struggle with their short games, but Hovland has made great strides this year, and with his power, he can really take off in Round 1.

He did have a 47th-place finish in last year’s Memorial Tournament, but Hovalnd also had a T-3 finish at Muirfield Village at the 2020 Workday Charity Open. Hovland has been on the cusp of a massive victory for quite some time now, and the way he is playing, I expect him to start the Memorial Tournament hot and lead after the first round.

Here is our favorite 2023 Memorial Tournament first-round prop bet.

Jason Day vs. Jon Rahm Round 1: Rahm (-170, DraftKings)

Rahm has had a lot of success in this tournament, winning in 2020 and having a top-10 finish in 2022. He also entered the final round in 2021 leading by six strokes but ultimately had to withdraw from the tournament after testing positive for Covid-19.

After starting the season hot, Rahm has significantly cooled off, finishing in the top 10 only twice in his last seven starts. However, one of those finishes includes winning the green jacket at the Masters, and this is a course that Rahm has been very comfortable in.

Meanwhile, Jason Day has been playing some of the best golf in his life but is also coming off a bad PGA Championship performance. In his career at the Memorial Tournament, Day has a T4 finish in 2019 but hasn’t finished better than 31st in his three other appearances. His T-4 finish came in 2020 when Rahm took home the crown.

Both golfers have history at Muirfield Village, but Rahm has played some of his best golf here, and that should continue for this year’s edition.
