In 1931 during the Great Depression six independent companies started the construction of Hoover Dam. They finished two years ahead of schedule with thousands of workers.
The Dam was completed in 1936 and the six companies turned it over to the federal government.
This past weekend while sitting at my usual spot betting the ponies at Palace Station a guy with sweat pouring down his face walked up to me and asked me what I thought the over and under was?
I asked him on what event and he said the event happening on Sahara. How many years do you think it will take to do the road?
If you have attempted to drive up or down, east or west, on Sahara you will know what he was talking about. What irks him is the city goes from one project to another while never finishing.
It seems like there are cones littering our once beautiful city in every direction. When the job looks finished they go right back and dig it up. I told him I ould not make an over and under because I didn’t think they would ever finish.
I also told him when the government is involved in anything it takes almost three times as long to get a job done. They can’t even run the Post Office.
In 1990 the government seized the Mustang Ranch, a very profitable brothel. They said Mustang didn’t pay all its taxes. They took it over and the brothel went broke.
Now we trust the building of our roads and running of our health plan and banking industry to people who could not make money running a brothel and selling booze?
Now that I’ve answered the question let’s go to the picks. I had a winning week in college football and am still looking for my 10-teamer. I did receive a nice letter from Daniel Kane, a loyal reader.
Seems Daniel and his girl friend Sandra Cano hit a 15-team mega-teaser and his co-worker hit an 8-team, ½-point parlay card. So remember, you can’t hit one if you don’t play one.
THURSDAY
NC State +7½ at Cincy: An entertaining game with plenty of scoring. The trends say take the TD with the Wolfpack as they have gone 8-0 ATS the last eight times getting a TD or more on the road. Take the points if you can get them and bet the total. NC STATE/OVER.
FRIDAY
C. Florida +3½ at BYU: Neither team has much offense. Trend says take the Knights, who are 6-0 ATS in this situation. Bet the total here, too. UCF/UNDER.
SATURDAY
Georgia -9½ at Ole Miss: The Bulldogs at least have some offense, averaging just over 40 points a game. Ole Miss is averaging 16. GEORGIA -9½.
LSU -5½ at W. Virginia: The Tigers are road warriors to say the least and they have speed, speed and more speed. Look for that to be the downfall of WVU. A real good play. LSU -5½.
Florida -17 at Kentucky: The Gators have won and covered all three of their games, while the Wildcats offense has been on hold. Look for a rout. FLORIDA.
Notre Dame -4½ at Pitt: I have a friend who tells me you can’t fall in love with a game, but I just love this one. I may go into hiding when it starts, but will be all over the Irish. Panthers are 0-3 ATS this season. NOTRE DAME.
Vandy +16 at S. Carolina: The Commodores have gone 3-0 SU and ATS, have a solid offense and a real good defense. They get the cover. VANDY.
Oregon -14 at Arizona: If you are stuck this could be a good get out game. The Wildcats don’t have the guns to stick with the explosive Ducks offense who are posting over 50 a game. OREGON.
SUNDAY
Lions -3 at Vikings (NFL): Detroit is on fire and rightly favored in Minnesota. That early money in the futures is starting to look good. Vikings coughed it up last week at home against the Bucs, blowing a 17-point lead only to lose straight up 24-20. Lions crushed KC 48-3. LIONS.
