ACC Football Futures Odds: Clemson Atop Betting Board but NC State Offers Value

Clemson is the betting favorite at FanDuel to win the 2022 ACC football title, but expect an upstart NC State team to be in championship contention this year.

The Tigers saw their conference supremacy go by the wayside last year when Pittsburgh won the ACC title under the direction of QB Kenny Pickett. Pickett is now a Pittsburgh Steeler, and NC State has the conference’s top QB in Devin Leary.

FanDuel is dealing Clemson at -155, and the Tigers have an implied winning probability of 60.78% at that number. With NC State offered at +750, the Wolfpack’s implied probability of winning is 11.76%.

Clemson’s a Worthy Favorite After Down Year

The Tigers failed to meet their typical lofty expectations last year with a 10-3 overall record. That’s a solid record for most teams but most teams aren’t Clemson. It marked the 11th consecutive 10-win season for head coach Dabo Swinney, who led the Tigers to 14- and 15-win seasons in the two previous years, respectively.

Clemson has D.J. Uiagalelei back at QB but heralded freshman Cade Klubnik could also see some time under center. Clemson’s offense let the Tigers down last season, ranking 99th in the nation with Uiagalelei struggling on occasion.

Clemson’s defense is expected to be among the nation’s best again this season. It ranked eighth in total defense last season, and the front seven comes highly regarded entering the 2022 season.

Best Value Play: NC State Wolfpack

NC State’s chance for a 10-win season was scrapped last year when the Wolfpack’s bowl game against UCLA was canceled due to Covid.

QB Devin Leary is among 17 starters returning for the Wolfpack. Leary threw for 3,433 yards and set a single-season school record with 35 TDs last year. Wide receivers Devin Carter and Thayer Thomas are both back, too, as primary targets for Leary.

Thomas caught 51 passes and notched a team-high eight touchdowns last year. Carter totaled 31 receptions for 556 receiving yards and six TDs.

NC State’s biggest tests will come on October 1 at Clemson and November 5 when it hosts Wake Forest. Sportsbooks including DraftKings set the Wolfpack’s season win total at 8.5, and the over is juiced to -150 with the under at +130.

NC State should eclipse that number with winnable non-conference games against East Carolina, Charleston Southern, and UConn.

Boston College, at +5000, has one of the league’s most talented duos in QB Phil Jurkovec and WR Zay Flowers.

Jurkovec missed a large portion of last season after fracturing his hand in the second game of the year against UMass. Flowers led the Eagles with 746 receiving yards and five TDs.

BC also boasts a strong defense, especially in the secondary. Most of the starters are back including Josh DeBerry and Jaiden Woodbey. The Eagles ranked third nationally last year after allowing an average of just 173.5 passing yards per game. Boston College wasn’t as proficient against the rush, but its fortunes could rise if it shores that up in 2022.

Clemson will provide the stiffest challenge for Boston College on October 8, but the game will be played in Chestnut Hill. BC took Clemson to the wire last season before losing 19-13. That marked the second straight six-point loss to the Tigers after a 34-28 decision in 2020.
