Betting Picks to Win 2023 AL Rookie of the Year

Gunnar Henderson, Baltimore Orioles (+270, FanDuel)
Henderson is the consensus top prospect in the game, but we can take that ‘prospect’ tag off the kid, as he showed what he could do in just a short time with the major league club last season. In 34 games with the O’s last season, Henderson slashed .259/.348/.440 with an OPS of .788, and he added four home runs, 12 runs, and 18 RBI.
A deeper look at the numbers shows he also had a wRC+ of 125, and when he made contact, he did so emphatically with an average EV of 92.4 mph and a max EV of 111.1 MPH. Defensively, we needed to see more of him at the big league level to get a full idea of how he will fare as the team’s starting shortstop this season. His fielding through his career in the minors was an issue, but the 21-year-old phenom has a rocket arm, and Henderson possesses possibly the most crucial tool for a rookie: youth.
The 21-year-old will have plenty of time to figure out how to play at this level, and if he does, the Orioles might be way ahead of schedule and could be a playoff contender.
Masataka Yoshida, Boston Red Sox (+600, FanDuel)
Yoshida, one of the prize free agents from this offseason, will begin his MLB career with the Boston Red Sox and is projected to be the team’s cleanup hitter. While Boston might be in for a long season, Yoshida is the perfect player to start building off of, and Red Sox fans got their first taste of what he can do against top-end talent in the WBC, where he helped team Japan win its third WBC title.
In the WBC, Yoshida slashed .409/.531/.727 with an OPS of 1.258. While he is not known to be a power threat, he launched two monster shots in the WBC, and he led the entire tournament in RBI (13.)
While he is a 29-year-old rookie, he has plenty of experience playing professionally in Japan. In his seven-year career playing professionally in Japan, Yoshida slashed .326/.419/.538 with an OPS of .957, and he added 135 home runs and 474 RBI. More importantly, he has a tremendous feel for the strike zone, walking 427 times and striking out only 307.
Anthony Volpe, New York Yankees (+650, FanDuel)
Yankees fans got the news they have been waiting all spring for, as their top prospect will be the team’s starting shortstop on Opening Day. Rated as the No. 5 prospect in all of baseball, Volpe will look to bring some production to a position that the Yankees oddly seemed content on punting last season.
Volpe was able to outduel last season’s starter Isiah Kiner-Falefa and fellow youngster Oswaldo Cabrera this spring to take the starting job, but Cabreara was also informed that he would be making the roster.
Anyway, Volpe batted .314 with three homers, five RBI, and six doubles this spring, forcing manager Aaron Boone to put him in the starting lineup. The kid has an excellent feel for the strike zone, as he has already showcased the pop in his lumber this spring. He has all the tools to be a future megastar in this league, and there is no better place to become a star than with the most historic American professional sports team.
2023 AL Rookie of Year Award Winner Prediction
The Rookie of the Year has typically been given to a player on an up-and-coming team, but our pick is playing for a team projected to finish toward the bottom of the league standings. In previous seasons, we have seen players like Julio Rodriguez, Randy Arozarena, Yordan Alvarez, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, etc. win the AL Rookie of the Year, and at the same time, be a massive reason why their team went on to have immediate success.
Our pick to win the 2023 American League Rookie of the Year will be Masataka Yoshida. That is because we saw him have a monster WBC, and he will come in and shine on a Red Sox offense that honestly, simply does not have a lot going for them right now.
If his plate discipline and gap-hitting abilities he displayed during the WBC can translate to the MLB, which there is no reason it shouldn’t be able to as the WBC is filled with MLB talent, Yoshida can put up a big stat line, and take home the AL ROY with 6/1 preseason odds.
Pick: Yoshiada Masataka (+600, FanDuel)
