On Wednesday, Major League Baseball released the dates and games for their 2022 season. Once again each team will play 162 games in an unbalanced schedule format with series in their own division, league, and a number of interleague contests. The baseball season commences Thursday, March 31, and ends Sunday, October 2.

The largest change each season for most teams is their interleague schedule. Each season, MLB pairs each of the three divisions in a league with a division in the other league. This makes up most of the interleague games, though 22 of the 30 MLB teams have a “rival series” each season.

In 2022, here are the interleague division matchups:

  • NL East vs. AL West
  • NL Central vs. AL East
  • NL West vs. AL Central

Here are schedule highlights for select teams for next year.

Los Angeles Dodgers 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • Because of the NL West matchup with the AL Central, the Dodgers will have a home series against the newly named Cleveland Guardians in 2022, that will take place in April.
  • On April 22 the Dodgers will have their first game against division rival San Diego; and their first meeting against hated rival the Giants is May 3 at Dodger Stadium.

New York Yankees 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • The Yanks will face the Astros, against whom they have had a heated rivalry since the Trash Can Cheating Scandal came to light, on April 4-6.
  • As always, the Yankees and Red Sox will square off 19 times, including six times in the final three weeks of the season.
  • Shohei Ohtani will travel to Yankee Stadium in 2022, when the Yankees host the Angels for a three-game series from May 31-June 2.
  • The Mets and Yankees will face each other in a Crosstown Rivalry Series in July (two games) and August (two again).

Houston Astros 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • The Astros and Phillies will be the only teams to start the 2022 season with an interleague matchup, in March.
  • In June, the Astros will play six consecutive games in New York: four against their rivals the Yankees, and two against the Mets.

Chicago White Sox 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • The White Sox are dominating their division in 2021, but who knows how it will be in 2022. The Central is a topsy-turvy group of weird teams caught between contending and pretending. They begin the year with several games against division rivals the Royals and Twins, and the new Guardians.
  • The White Sox will finish the season against the Padres in San Diego, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, the only two teams to complete the schedule with interleague play.

New York Mets 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • As I stated above, the Mets square off against the Yankees in a Battle for New York in two two-game series in July and again in August.
  • The Mets’ first dozen games will be against divisional opponents.
  • Like the other NL East teams, the Mets will have to travel across the continent to face the Mariners, Angels, and A’s for their interleague competition.

San Francisco Giants 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • For the 13th straight season, the Giants will open ton the road, facing SoCal rival, the Padres.
  • The annual Bay Bridge Series against the A’s will take place April 26-27 at home and August 6-7 across the Bay in Oakland.
  • The Giants will face the Royals and Tigers, in rematches of the 2014 and 2012 World Series, respectively.

Tampa Bay Rays 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • The always-interesting Rays will begin the 2022 season with series against two AL East rivals: first the Red Sox to open play; then two more games at Fenway Park against the Orioles.
  • In a series that could have playoff implications, Tampa Bay faces Houston to end the season, Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

San Diego Padres 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • MLB schedule makers are exploiting the hot rivalry between the Padres and Dodgers: of the six series the two NL West teams play against each other, five come over the weekend when crowds can be larger and TV audiences can be optimized.
  • The Padres and Dodgers will face each other nine times in September, which could determine the division champion.
  • The Padres and Tigers will meet July 25-27, in a rematch of the 1984 World Series.

Chicago Cubs 2022 Schedule Highlights

  • Perhaps the most hotly contested crosstown rivalry series is the one between the Cubs and White Sox. Team records can be tossed out the window: when these two Windy City teams face off, bragging rights are on the line. The series will take place on the North Side on May 3-4, and move to the South Side on May 28-29.
  • The home opener at Wrigley Field will feature a rival: the Cardinals, on April 4.

Other MLB Schedule Highlights for 2022

  • After two pandemic-impacted seasons of playing in Buffalo, the Blue Jays will host their first home opener in Toronto since 2019, on April 4 against the Rays.
  • The Red Sox will also host the Reds (May 31-June 1), and the Cardinals (June 17-19) in rematches of the 1975 and 1967 World Series.
  • Cleveland will wear their new name “Guardians” across the chest for the first time on March 31 to open the 2022 season at Progressive Field against the Royals.
  • The Angels and Dodgers will meet in the Freeway Series at Dodger Stadium on June 14-15.
