Our Lions vs. Chiefs Touchdown Scorer Picks
Jahmyr Gibbs
The Lions’ selection of Jahmyr Gibbs with the No. 12 pick in the draft shocked many. However, that pick stays true to the culture that Dan Campbell has instilled in this franchise. They do not care about value or anything else. The Detroit Lions are simply looking for the best football players they can.
It is hard to argue against taking Gibbs when that is your strategy. Gibbs rushed for over six yards per carry at Alabama and had ten total touchdowns. He also showed off how much of a threat he is catching passes, as he put up 104 receptions for 1217 yards in three seasons in college.
Gibbs was the Swiss army knife of Alabama’s offense, which pared nicely with Bryce Young. He was the most dynamic and athletic player on the field every Saturday, and with the Lions’ offense relying on explosiveness and athleticism, Gibbs should fit right in and get plenty of touches.
While Detroit also brought in David Montgomery this offseason, he does not have the same ‘score from anywhere’ explosiveness that Gibbs possesses. Ultimately, the Chiefs are the better team in this game, which means the Lions will need to pass the ball to keep up.
If that happens, expect Gibbs to have plenty of designed plays to get him the ball and try and create explosive plays. The Chiefs’ defense also ranked 17th in yards per rush and yards per play last season, meaning they are prone to a lot of chunk plays. This plays very well for Gibbs, and he should be in an excellent spot to cash a touchdown scorer ticket.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling
With Travis Kelce questionable, Marquez Valdes-Scantling could be the team’s top returning pass-catcher for this game. In his first season with the Chiefs, he put up career-highs in targets (81) and receptions (42). He only scored two touchdowns last season, but he is still one of the best deep threats in the NFL.
In 2020, he led the NFL in yards per reception (20.9) but has since seen his Y/R drop to 16.5 in 2021 and 16.4 last season. However, he still ranked in the top 10 in both seasons, and the difference between him and first place (Jaylen Waddle) was only 1.4 yards per catch.
The Chiefs do not run the ball much, which is not surprising when you have the most talented quarterback in the history of football on your side. Since Mahomes became the starter in Kansas City, no one has been more targeted by one quarterback than Kelce. There is still a chance her can play, as he currently has the shortest anytime touchdown odds, but he certainly will not be 100%.
Kansas City’s wide receiver room is as deep as it has been in quite some time, but no one has more ‘explosive-play’ potential than Valdes-Scantling. Kansas City has ranked inside the top 10 in yards per pass in the last six seasons, and there is no reason to believe that will change this season.
