The Wildcats enter this season with a bad taste in their mouths after suffering what could be the most embarrassing loss in program history. For the second time in the last five seasons, the Wildcats lost to a double-digit seed in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This time, it came at the hands of the No. 15 Princeton Tigers.
Now, Princeton made it all the way to the Sweet 16 and battled in that game, but in no world should a team as talented year in and year out as Arizona should lose to a 15 seed. While head coach Tommy Lloyd did a nice job rebuilding this roster, they have a lot of production to replace.
Arizona said goodbye to leading scorer Azuolas Tubelis and guards Kerr Kriisa, Cedric Henderson Jr., and Courtney Ramey. Luckily, Arizona is a very desirable destination for top-ranked recruits and transfer portal players.
This offseason, Arizona added former UNC standout Caleb Love and forward Keshad Johnson, an important two-way player for San Diego State’s run to the national championship game last season. Those two, along with Alabama transfer Jaden Bradley, will join a deep rotation that will rely on incredible shooting depth.
The Wildcats do not possess a lot of size outside of seven-footer Oumar Ballo, but freshman Motiejus Krivas looks to be a significant player off the bench for the Wildcats. Although he only shot 2-7 from the field, Krivas put up 12 points and five rebounds in the opening night win over Morgan State.
This team should have a lot of athleticism with the sheer amount of guards in the rotation, and they will likely be one of the most three-point-reliant teams in the country. Depending on how you look at it, that could be a good or bad thing. While the three-pointer is the most effective shot in basketball, if you are having a bad day from deep, chances are you will get run off the court, especially in the tournament.
However, Love is one of the most aggressive guards in the country at driving the ball inside, and Ballo, Krivas, and Johnson should do a good enough job creating shots close to the basket. Coach Lloyd emphasized creating turnovers on defense, and with the amount of three-guard lineups that they will be running, look for Arizona to improve on last year’s lackluster steals number.

The first year of the Jon Scheyer era ended in disappointment, but Duke is still operating as the massive brand it has been for decades. They are still recruiting at the highest level, bringing in four five-star recruits: Caleb Foster, Sean Stewart, Jared McCain, and TJ Power. McCain and Foster played double-digit minutes in the opening win, while Power and Stewart appeared in garbage time.
The starting lineup features a healthy mix of youth and experience. McCain is one of the top scorers in the country and will join a starting five that features guards Jeremey Roach and Tyrese Proctor, as well as a frontcourt of Mark Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski.
Although Duke ‘underachieved’ last season, they are bringing back four starters and, as always, added some of the best freshmen in the country. Coach Scheyer also brought in a few transfers to fill out the bench, but the Blue Devils will rely primarily on returning production and the No. 2 ranked recruiting class.
They are dealing with some injuries, most notably to Mitchell, but Northwestern transfer Ryan Young brings more beef inside, which will be needed to take the pressure off Filipowski. This Duke team will score, and they are deep enough that the defensive issues inside are not as concerning.
This Duke team is unusual in that they still have a ton of future NBA lottery picks, but they also have a lot of experience returning from an excellent team last season. As long as the freshman pan out, we could be looking at the eventual National Champion.

Arizona vs. Duke Prediction: Blue Devils Pick Up Key Win
This is just a terrific matchup to start the college basketball season. Both teams rank inside the top 10 in KenPom’s Adjusted Offensive Efficiency rating and top 25 in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency rating.
Obviously, those stats mean nothing until we see these teams actually play. However, these are two well-balanced and talented rosters. Duke has more freshman talent and returning production, but do not count out how explosive and athletic Arizona is.
The Wildcats will play with a lot of tempo, resulting in more three-point shots and drives to the basket. But Arizona is replacing four starters, and during the preseason, the lack of chemistry was an issue. While the final score showed they crushed every team they played, it is evident that this team was still learning how to play with each other.
Eventually, they will transition into one of the best offenses in the country, and defensively, they can match up with most teams. Arizona has a brutal schedule, taking on Duke, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Alabama, and FAU before Christmas. These games will be perfect to build on-court chemistry before Pac-12 play begins, but Duke will prove to be too much for the Wildcats to handle.
When the tournament comes, it would not surprise me if these are two of the best teams in the country. However, Duke has more experience and overall roster talent. They also have been unbeatable at home in November, winning their last 17 games at Cameron Indoor Stadium during the season’s first month.
