President-elect George W. Bush’s designation of former U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft of
Missouri to be U.S. attorney general is extremely bad news for the gaming industry.

Ashcroft, a religious zealot, is totally and unalterably opposed to all forms of
gambling. He’s also against dancing and drinking.

With Ashcroft in control, the Justice Department can be counted on to give the short
end of the stick to casinos, race tracks, civil libertarians, feminists, Afro-Americans,
the poor and the elderly. For 30 years, I’ve been voting against Ashcroft for
whichever office he sought. I was finally rewarded last November when he was defeated for
re-election.

Now he surfaces in a position where he can do more harm than he could as a senator. For
me, it’s a classic case of being careful what you wish for; you might get it.

The much-hyped addition of Dennis Miller to ABC’s Monday Night Football can be
written off as a failure.

Predictions for 2001

Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick will pass up his senior season and declare for the
NFL draft. He said earlier he’d return for his final college year, but lately says
he’s keeping his options open. Vick figures to be the first quarterback selected in
the draft — quite possibly the first player overall — and is in line to become
an instant millionaire. An influence on his decision is that the Hokies will graduate
their entire offensive line…

Platinum Tiara, a 3-year-old filly now training in Florida, will dominate her division
this year. Owned by a consortium that includes former major league baseball players, she
finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after a troubled trip. Her main
objective this spring is the Kentucky Oaks…

The National League rookie of the year will be San Francisco Giants third baseman Pedro
Feliz. This 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic slugged 33 home runs last year for
Triple-A Fresno. He gives the Giants a quartet of infielders who could produce 100 home
runs among them…

The St. Louis Blues will win the Stanley Cup. Last year, they had the best record in
the NHL for the regular season, but lacked the toughness needed to win the playoffs…

Despite the signings of Alex Rodriguez by the Texas Rangers and Manny Ramirez by the
Boston Red Sox, neither team will overtake the New York Yankees, who will again win the
American League pennant. The reason: neither the Rangers nor the Red Sox have enough
pitching. The Yankees have the best pitching staff in the league. The most important
signing in the off-season has been the Yankees acquiring Mike Mussina…

The Oakland Raiders will win the Super Bowl…
