Betting on their favorite team is one way many fans like to show support. It seems that one Atlanta Hawks fan showed a lot of support for his team with a pair of $20,000 bets. One is for the Hawks to win the East and the other for Atlanta to win the NBA Finals.

Making it happen will be no small feat. Following Monday night’s win over the Portland Trailblazers, the Hawks are 36-30 and just a half-game ahead of the Miami Heat for the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

But no 5-seed has ever won the NBA Finals. In fact, of the 74 champions the NBA has crowned, 72 of them were either a 1-seed, 2-seed, or 3-seed. The two outliers were the Houston Rockets (6-seed in 1993-94) and the Boston Celtics (4-seed; 1968-69).

Last season saw a 5-seed make the NBA Finals for the first time (the Miami Heat), which means they were the first 5-seed ever to win their conference.

However, if the Hawks can make it happen, this bettor stands to win $2.8 million.

Atlanta Hawks Odds

DraftKings currently has the Hawks listed at +10000 to win the NBA Finals and +4000 to win the East. Those odds translate into a .99 percent chance of winning the Finals and a 2.44 percent chance of winning the East.

So, while the payout will be fantastic if the bettor wins both wagers, it does not look like he/she has a realistic chance of winning either. Of course, if they can overtake the New York Knicks for the 4-seed, their chances increase a little– but only a little.
