Battle 4 Atlantis 2023 Tournament Overview

The national television exposure will be good for the betting handle, according to Johnny Avello, the director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings. He views that as a known concept. The unknown element is the tournament handicapping itself.

“It’s one thing that we can get an idea who the favorite should be and what the line of the first game ought to stand, but beyond that, we find that this is pretty tricky,” Avello told Gaming Today.

“This is different from the NCAA tournament at the end of the season. In that one, teams have already been seasoned throughout the year and playing at another level. In these tournaments, the teams haven’t really reached true form yet. They have only played a couple of games. A lot of unexpected things can happen.”

Betting uncertainty extends to the gamblers. If a line looks unattractive, with one team favored by so much that it appears unplayable, props may be the way to go.

“We see that in quite a few of these tournaments that bettors may want to take the props even ahead of the actual game,” Avello said.

“Let’s say you thought that was true in the North Carolina game. You may say, ‘I don’t want to lay 30 points, but I think North Carolina can throw up something like 87 points.’ So you take the prop for North Carolina to go Over a certain amount. Sometimes, that takes the guesswork out.”

Avello noted that player props vary by jurisdiction. Some bettors will have a full plate available to them. Others will be limited because their state has not approved the props.

That said, here’s a look at the field and what players have emerged in limited action this season. These players may be the target for props, especially on weaker teams that rely more heavily on one or two individuals.

North Carolina (Record: 3-0)

Armando Bacot averages 22.7 points,13.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. R.J. Davis has added 14, and Harrison Ingram has 12 points per game. The Tar Heels have beaten three weak opponents by an average of 21 points per game. The axis looks like a Game 1 victory and a semifinal matchup with Texas Tech or Villanova.

Northern Iowa (Record: 1-1)

Nate Heise has been the bright light in two games. He leads the teams in points at 16.5. That’s not surprising for a guard. But he also paces them with seven rebounds. That is surprising and does not bode well for the team’s chances in the middle.

Villanova (Record: 3-1)

The Wildcats are nationally ranked but did stumble in a 76-72 loss to crosstown Penn. Justin Moore is the team’s leading scorer with 16 points. Tyler Burton averages 8.2 boards.

Texas Tech (Record: 3-0)

Texas Tech has faced lesser opposition and now steps up. Pop Isaacs has been the top scorer with 11.7 points and the best playmaker with 3.3 assists. Darrion Williams has pulled down nine boards per game.

Michigan (Record: 3-2)

Dug McDaniel has led Michigan with 21 points and 6.2 assists per game. Olivier Nkamhoua has been big off the boards with 8.8 rebounds per game. Bettors may recognize that name in a different uniform. He played for the Tennessee team that won this tournament last year. Michigan is coming off a loss to Long Beach State.

Memphis (Record: 3-0)

Memphis relies on David Jones for 15.7 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Jahvon Quinerly has racked up 4.3 assists and two steals per game. Memphis has hit over 90 points twice.

Arkansas (Record: 3-1)

Arkansas has lost three straight ATS amid high expectations but is playing well overall. The Razorbacks rely on Khalif Battle for 16.5 points, Trevon Brazile for 6.5 rebounds, and El Ellis for 3.8 assists.

Stanford (Record: 3-1)

Possible prop consideration on the Total. Cardinal games have averaged 165.5 thus far. Even if they are outgunned, it could be in a high-scoring game. Maxime Raynaud leads Stanford for 19.2 points and nine rebounds per game. Jared Bynum adds 8.2 assists.
