Chicago Bears (3-7, 4-6 ATS) at Detroit Lions (0-9-1, 6-4 ATS)
Betting line (DraftKings): Bears -3 (41.5)
The skinny: For the 83rd time, the Lions host a Thanksgiving Day game, and for the third time Detroit enters winless (2001, 2008).
Facts: Chicago coach Matt Nagy, whose team is on a five-game skid, spent this short week not only prepping his team but also responding to questions regarding a report that he was told he was going to be fired after the game.
Goff (oblique) gave way to first-time starter Tim Boyle for last week’s 13-10 loss at Cleveland. Goff sat out all practices before that game, but this week participated in drills Monday and Tuesday, prompting coach Dan Campbell to say he believes it’s trending toward Goff returning for Thursday. We’ll see.
Chicago will go with opening-day QB starter Andy Dalton in place of rookie Justin Fields (doubtful, ribs). Last week in a relief role in a 16-13 loss to Baltimore, Dalton had TD passes of 60 and 49 yards but hit on only nine of his other 21 throws.
The Bears were on a five-game loss streak last year, too, when they played Detroit in Week 16. The Lions made it six, winning 34-30 in Chicago.
1979 Turkey Day flashback: A Lions team with a 1-11 mark beat the 7-5 Bears by a score of 20-0. But Detroit doesn’t have QB Jeff Komlo anymore.
Bears At Lions Analysis And Pick
After the final cuts this summer and rosters were solidified, the Bears were listed as having the oldest team in the NFL league. That doesn’t bode well for a squad on ultra-short rest and prep time and having to travel. The Lions were listed as second youngest.
What’s also a positive for Detroit has been the rushing of D’Andre Swift, who had 130 yards on 33 carries two weeks ago vs. Pittsburgh and then 136 and a touchdown last week in Cleveland despite 19 fewer carries.
As for the QB situation, if Boyle plays, he’ll benefit from the absence of Bears star defender Khalil Mack. And Boyle might not have to score much since two of Chicago’s top receivers, Darnell Mooney and Allen Robinson are questionable.
Pick: Lions 24, Bears 20
