Bet March Madness: Tournament Preview

The 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. With Ohio sports betting going live in January and Massachusetts following in March, this will be the first time betting on the tournament for millions of sports fans.

Whether you’re betting every game of the tournament, placing a couple of futures, or just want to win the office bracket pool, remember that they call it March Madness for a reason — who will be the surprise team this year?

  • At least one of the top-4 seeds have gone down in the first round in 13 of the last 14 tournaments
  • A No. 12 seed has upset a no. 5 seed in 32 of the last 37 tournaments
  • All four no. 2 seeds have advanced to the Sweet 16 only two times in the last 25 tournaments

Kansas, the reigning champion, enters this year’s tournament as a No. 1 seed. Despite losing Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun to the NBA last summer, the Jayhawks have a strong roster. Likely All-American forward Jalen Wilson is scoring 19.7 PPG and securing 8.4 RPG. The Jayhawks have had an impressive season with key wins over Texas, Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Despite the success of Kansas, it’s the Houston Cougars entering the tournament as the favorite to cut the net this year (and in their home city to boot). Kelvin Sampson’s team has been on a tear this season and has finished with over 27 wins for the fifth team in the last sixth years. It remains to be seen how Houston will fare against better competition — the AAC wasn’t exactly a powerhouse.

Purdue and Alabama round out the other two No. 1 seeds for this year’s tournament. A couple 2 can make a lot of noise as well, including the Arizona Wildcats and Marquette Golden Eagles.

Dark horse contenders include the No. 8 seeded Arkansas Razorbacks who will face off against Illinois in the first round of tournament play. They lost to Alabama by just three points late in the year and notched key victories over Texas A&M and San Diego State. Keep an eye on VCU (a dreaded No. 12 against the No. 5), Miami, UConn, and Saint Mary’s to potentially bust some brackets.

Is there a sleeper team you think will make some noise this year? Bet a team to advance to the Final Four, Elite Eight, or Sweet Sixteen with BetMGM Sportsbook here.

March Madness: Schedule and How to Watch

The tournament officially tips off Thursday with the first round of play at various venues across the nation. The second round will be played this weekend with the preceding rounds over the coming weeks before the Championship Game in Houston.

  • March 16-17 (Round of 64)
  • March 18-19 (Round of 32)
  • March 23-24 (Sweet 16)
  • March 25-26 (Elite 8)
