Big 12 odds are in place for the 2022 season, and you can place your wagers on the school you expect to emerge as the best in conference.
Heading into the 2022 college football season, it’s little surprise that Texas and Oklahoma sit as betting favorites to win the Big 12. That’s the case even though both schools had a measure of struggle in 2021. The Longhorns lost six games in a row(!), and the Sooners were a mediocre 2-2 against ranked teams, even losing to rival Oklahoma State.
Last season, Baylor defeated Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship Game, 21-16

Big 12 Could be Wide Open Battle
The Big 12 as we know it is doomed. The two most successful schools in the conference, Oklahoma and Texas, are scheduled to leave to join the SEC, possibly as soon as the 2024 season.
That means we have only three seasons to see the Sooners and Longhorns battle it out in one of the most storied groups of college football programs in history.

Sure, Baylor claimed the Big 12 title in 2021, and the Bears completed a fine season with a victory over Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl. But, experts tab the Sooners to be back in the mix, and the Longhorns to rebound from only its third six-loss season since 1956.
Many pre-season Top 10 polls list Baylor and Oklahoma, with some mentioning Oklahoma State. College football expert Tim Brando picked Baylor to be an elite college football team once again.
While oddsmakers have traditional powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma with the shortest odds to win the Big 12, the field looks to be competitive. Baylor has much of its top-rated defense back, and Oklahoma is navigating a shuffling of its coaching staff, after the exit of Lincoln Riley for USC.
Mike Gundy has his Cowboys prepared to follow up on a 12-win season, with a team built on defense, special teams, and ball control. Oklahoma State needs to up its offensive production if 12 wins can be achieved again. But, there’s good reason for optimism in Tulsa: the roster is still sprinkled with junior and senior leadership and playmakers.
Last season, the Longhorns were very un-Longhorn. The team surrendered an embarrassing 6.03 yards per play and 31 points a game. The defensive line allowed more than 200 rushing yards as opponents just manhandled Texas and hung seven losses on first-year coach Steve Sarkisian. If the team doesn’t get back over eight wins in 2022, Sarkisian may be looking for a new job. Reportedly, Texas has reinforcements coming in the form of freshman and sophomore stars to fill in the gaps, especially on the defensive front eight.
Don’t sleep on Kansas State. The pesky Wildcats have running back Deuce Vaughn and Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez (a dynamic QB) in the backfield. That tandem could give Big 12 opponents headaches. Both players can swivel and dash between and around defenders and move the chains.
Three teams: Iowa State, West Virginia, and TCU, have enough talent to be spoilers in the Big 12 in 2022. The more talented teams need to take them seriously or suffer a hiccup defeat on the conference schedule. The Horned Frogs are entering a new era following the exit of head coach Gary Patterson in the middle of the 2021 season. He’s replaced by Sonny Dykes, who is charged with keeping the program on track as an often-underestimated football team.
Pick to Win the Big 12 in 2022
Yes, the experts are fixated on Oklahoma and Texas. But that’s the safe opinion, and frankly a bit lazy.
Baylor returns more impact players, has the best defense in the conference, and is looking to build on a 12-win season. The Bears are our pick to win the Big 12 in 2022 at +600 odds, making it two straight for Baylor.
Big 12 Football Longshot Pick
The Kansas State Wildcats. Last season, KSU held a lead in 11 of its 13 games, and played No. 6 Oklahoma and Baylor very tough. This is a ball control team with an airtight defense. In short, the Wildcats attempt to make zero mistakes, and pound you at the line of scrimmage. There’s a universe where this team wins seven games in conference and sneaks away with the Big 12 title. We’ll just have to see if we’re living in that universe this fall.
