Although the hustle and bustle of the Las Vegas Strip always gets my juices flowing, sometimes it’s nice to just kick back and slow down with a nice meal consisting of what I refer to as comfort food.

For years we have had a Black Bear Diner (6180 W. Tropicana Ave.) in Vegas. I have visited many times but recently they opened a second location closer to me in Henderson at 2751 N. Green Valley Parkway.

When you step inside it’s like you are walking into a mountain cabin or lodge. Actually, the first Black Bear Diner was located at the base of Mt. Shasta in California.

Eating at Black Bear Diner reminds me of the small mom and pop shops I used to frequent back home in Pennsylvania. Nothing fancy just good home cooked food like your mom or grandmother would make.

When you sit down to order, the menu is actually a newspaper on the outside with the menu items on the inside. I’ll admit I probably like breakfast here the most because it’s massive as are all their portions.

The other nice thing is they serve breakfast all day. One of my favorite breakfast meals at Black Bear is The Grizz, which basically covers all the bases. You get three eggs done how you like along with two sausage links, two pieces of bacon and a piece of ham steak. I mean really, it’s early in the morning and why should you have to face a major decision so early in the day?

Even though there really is no wrong answer in regards to sausage, bacon or ham steak, why choose when you can have all three?

You also get to choose between hash browns or country potatoes. That in itself would be enough but with The Grizz you also get two sweet cream pancakes. Now that’s the way to jumpstart your day.

My wife loves their biscuit and gravy breakfast, which she orders almost every time we visit.

For me nothing says comfort food like meatloaf. Yes, a very simple dish but oh so good. When I order the meatloaf I switch out the mashed potatoes for French fries and have them pour the gravy over both.

One of my other favorites here is the Hot Turkey Plate. We all love Thanksgiving dinner but why wait till November as you can have carved turkey breast with potatoes and gravy anytime at Black Bear Diner.

Save room for dessert because they have several fresh homemade treats to choose from. A couple of my favorites are Grandma’s Famous Cobbler with ice cream or one of their fresh pies. Don’t worry if you are too full, just order it to go, which is what I do most of the time.

The wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive and portions are huge while the prices are not. So if you want to kick back for some good old fashion home cooked food head over to one of the Black Bear locations. I give Black Bear Diner 3.50 Forks.
