Black-Eyed Susan Betting Favorite & Contenders

Faiza is the 7-5 morning-line favorite for trainer Bob Baffert. She did not compete in the Kentucky Oaks due to Baffert’s suspension at Churchill Downs.

Faiza is unbeaten in five career starts including victories at Santa Anita in the Las Virgenes (G3), the Santa Ysabel (G3), and Santa Anita Oaks (G2) this year.

Faiza is making her first start outside of California. If the favorite pulls through on Friday, Baffert ties the all-time record for Black-Eyed Susan wins at four.

Trainer Brad Cox counters with Merlazza, the second choice on the morning line at 6-1. Cox is looking to go back-to-back in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes after Interstatedaydream won from his barn last year.

With three wins in four career starts, Merlazza has never finished worse than second. She’s coming off a win last month in the Valley of the Vapors at Oaklawn Park.

Trainer Tom Amoss sends out Hoosier Philly (10-1), who has struggled recently after going undefeated as a 2-year-old with three wins at Churchill Downs.

Competing at the Fair Grounds as a 3-year-old, Hoosier Philly finished third in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) and fourth in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2). Hoosier Philly has jockey Edgar Morales aboard and starts from Post No. 3.

Sacred Wish (10-1) is coming off a second-place finish in the Gulfstream Park Oaks. The lightly raced filly has one win in three career starts. John Velazquez gets the mount and starts from Post No. 1.

Jockey Manny Franco aims to give Balpool (8-1) her fourth victory after being aboard for the first three. Balpool was dominant in her last two outings, but this marks her first attempt at 1-1/8 miles.

Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Best Bets & Predictions

As much as we hate betting chalk, Faiza is clearly the horse to beat here. We’re targeting a boxed exacta with Faiza, Merlazza, Sacred Wish, and Hoosier Philly.

The hope is one of those three fillies can outduel Faiza down the stretch and boost our exacta payout in the process. Brad Cox won this race last year with a 6-1 shot in Interstatedream, and Merlazza could give him a similar price based on morning-line odds.
