So many things can be said about how Major League Baseball has handled its pending regular season. Or lack thereof.

This has truly been an ugly situation. Both the owners and players come off looking horrendous, and even if the campaign does commence, there will still be a distinct distaste as the early slates unfold.

If you’re a gambler, you can only look on helplessly. How do you study or prepare for something in which the parameters and structure are sizzling with volatility?

The answer is to keep reading up. Sure, the two sides haggling for their preferred number of games is troublesome; that’s a particular detail that will ultimately determine how games are managed, how pitchers are deployed and how frequent certain hitters will be in the lineup, among other key factors that go into projecting.

So, too, will the probable universal DH. This alone should have a considerable impact, as National League over/unders will tick up at least a bit. Now is the time to start cinching in on the newfound options NL clubs will have at their disposal in being able to use an extra, actual hitter.

Successfully betting on baseball requires everyday activity regardless. For example, my daily routine that spans many hours every overnight or early morning during the season involves scanning through player quotes, trying to get a feel on them.

I’ve actually maintained some semblance of regular monitoring during pandemic life. Keeping up with the athletes — specifically, starting pitchers to gauge their commitment and desire for persevering through all of this — can provide you a beat on someone well before a pitch is even thrown. Figuring out the mental side of the game is a strong indicator in prognosticating performance.

Chances are you haven’t really been studying baseball’s off-the-field life throughout everything that has occurred — and understandably so. But as frustrating as it is to watch these messy negotiations play out in public, now is the time to really start distilling your focus again into our national pastime. Applying your critical thinking into who you believe is set nicely in a third-of-a-season year.

Dedication and passion cannot be taught. Reading into what players have been up to and their thoughts can help measure how prepared they’ll be when you’re betting on them. And preparing yourself for a type of campaign that none of us have ever seen before can only be vital in making your upcoming betting trek as smooth as possible. Godspeed.
