Viktor Hovland (+3500, FanDuel)

Although he is a clear step below some of the best golfers in the world, Viktor Hovland has been money this season, finishing in the top eight four times, including a victory at Muirfield Village Golf Club and a second-place finish at the PGA Championship.

Hovland ranks 10th in strokes gained from tee-to-green. While he can get in some trouble with his wedge shots around the green, he has risen to the moment in majors, gaining +0.60 strokes around the green since the 2022 Open Championship compared to -0.11 strokes per round at every other event.

He does not have a top-10 finish since winning the memorial, but this is a tournament that he has had a lot of success at, finishing T4 last year and shooting a 68 in the first round. He also finished T12 in 2021 and has shot in the 60s in the first round of his last four majors.

His struggles later in the tournament, most notably on Sundays, where he shot two over at St. Andrews last year, are concerning for Hovalnd’s odds of winning the British Open. Still, he has really nailed down his short game and ranks in the top 40 in driving distance and accuracy.

If his stellar play out of the box continues, he should thrive at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club this year and be in an excellent spot to be atop the leaderboard after Round 1. At a +3500 price at FanDuel, you can start the British Open with great odds on one of the game’s hottest golfers.

Picking the outright leader to win any major is challenging, let alone the end of Round 1 leader. Luckily, the top sports betting apps offer hundreds of British Open prop bets for the entire tournament and first round. We recommend you check out FanDuelBetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook for the best 2023 British Open first-round props.

Each sportsbook has its unique props for the first round. Navigate to your sports betting platform of choice’s ‘Round Props’ tab to search for your favorite wagers. From “Player vs. Player odds” to a first-round score over/under, bettors have plenty of chances to get in on the action.

Here is our favorite 2023 British Open first-round prop bet.

Scottie Scheffler To Shot 69 or Lower In Round 1 (-125, BetMGM)

There is not much more to be said about Scheffler this season other than he is, without a doubt, the best golfer on the planet. While he has yet to win a tournament since the Player Championship back in March, he has four top-three finishes, and outside of a missed cut at Austin Country Club, his lowest finish was at the RBC Heritage, where he finished 11th.

He has gained an incredible 197 strokes from tee to green since last October, more than second and third place combined. It is no secret that his putter has cost him a few times this season, most notably at the US Open, but he leads the PGA in strokes gained on approach, off the tee, tee-to-green, and total strokes gained.

The last time the Open Championship was held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, he finished T8, and last season he shot a 68 in the first two rounds before a 74 on Sunday had him fall all the way to T21. He has been much better since then, and with how good he is with his driver, he should thrive at this course and put up a good number at the British Open in the first round.
