It’s football season so I’m spending a lot of time watching College and NFL games. I’m always looking for new places to watch the games, grab some food and have a few cold ones. Fortunately for me the new place I found is very close to my house and is a perfect spot to catch the games and grab some food.
Bubby’s University (4570 S. Hualapai Way) has two different bars you can sit at. Doesn’t matter if you sit at the upper or lower bar, there will be TV’s all around so you won’t miss a single play of the action. If you don’t see the game you are looking for just ask one of the bartenders and they will get the game you want on for you.
Bubby’s is a fun place to hang out and in case you haven’t guessed by the name it does have that college campus bar feel to it. This is a bar you can and have fun at for hours. They have an outdoor patio complete with beer pong, corn hole and even a football goal post. There are several different theme nights catering to the younger college crowd.
Wednesday’s are known as Wet Wednesday’s. For $20 ladies get all “you can drink” from 9 p.m. till midnight. Thursday nights are known as Balls Deep Thursday as they have beer pong tournaments with a $100 first place prize. As you can imagine the specialty nights can get pretty busy.
I’m way past my prime of college high jinx so I’m all about food, drink and watching sports. Bubby’s University has a good selection of beers to enjoy while watching the games but for me I need to have food, as it’s hard work watching football all day.
The menu is pretty diverse from normal bar food items such as burgers, cheesesteaks, hot dogs, corn dogs, pizza and wings to items you might not expect at a sports bar. You can order pastas, meatloaf or even a deep fried turkey leg.
I haven’t tried a pasta dish yet but I’ve seen several come out of the kitchen and they serve the pasta inside a French bread bowl. For me, football goes hand in hand with chicken wings. When Bubby’s first opened they didn’t have wings on the menu. Really, a sports bar without wings… well, there should be a law prohibiting that sort of thing.
Happily, Bubby’s rectified the situation as they now have wings on a separate menu. They are very good and come in several different sauces. The wings are from Wing King here in Las Vegas. If you have been to any wing fests in Nevada you know all about Wing King and their sauces as they have won several awards. This was a great addition to the menu.
I saved one of the best items, the Tater Tots, for last. Bubby’s has an entire menu section just for them. They have specialty tater tots such as Buffalo Tots, Mexican Tots, Sloppy Joe Tots and more.
For me, though, I just like mine plain as they are cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside and moist inside. I have been known to dip my tots in my wing sauce. Try it, you’ll like it.
Bubby’s has a good Happy Hour from 4 to 7 p.m. and midnight to 3 a.m. During Happy Hour they have drink specials and many of the food items are 50 percent off. The food portions are huge and the bartenders are very friendly and attentive. I give Bubby’s University a rating of 3.5 Forks.
