March Madness Outlook

The University of Houston dropped the American Athletic Conference Championship to Memphis after just escaping them with a buzzer-beater a few days earlier. However, the Cougars were without star guard Marcus Sasser, who sat out due to a groin injury. The injury caused a slight change in Houston’s March Madness odds, but the health of Sasser is definitely something to keep your eyes on.

If the groin injury lingers, Houston’s offense will take a significant blow. Sasser leads the team in scoring at 17 points per game and is by far their most dependable scorer in a tight spot. The lack of Sasser’s services has already shown to be detrimental to a Cougars’ offense that is limited even with him on the court.

Watch out for Texas

For a brief part of the season, The University of Texas captured the No. 1 spot in college hoops. The Longhorns dropped a few contests immediately after claiming the top spot and became an afterthought. Since then, they’ve regrouped and won the Big 12, the toughest conference in basketball this year. They’ve also racked up the second-most wins against quadrant 1 schools.

The Longhorns are battle tested and have shown that when in a rhythm, they are one of the best teams in the nation, handing the Kansas Jayhawks one of the worst defeats of the season to win the Big 12 Tournament.

Round 1 Upset Watch: Penn State vs. Texas A&M

The matchup is expected to be close. The Aggies are opened as 3.5-point favorites in the game, but there is a key difference that makes Penn State a great option on the moneyline – efficiency. The Nittany Lions shoot three percentage points better than the Aggies from the field, and six percentage points better from beyond the arc.

That difference is also reflected in both teams’ star players. Penn State’s star guard Jalen Pickett averages 18 points per game on nearly 52% shooting, while A&M’s star guard Wade Taylor averages 16 points per game on 40% shooting. The difference in shooting percentages is stark and is sure to have a hand in determining the winner in a tight contest.
