DraftKings has hired the man that holds a record that will most likely never be broken. Cal Ripken Jr. and DraftKings (NSDQ: DKNG) are poised to work together for the foreseeable future, with the baseball legend serving as a special advisor.

The former Baltimore Orioles shortstop owns the record for most consecutive games played. In a sports culture filled with “load-management” – Cal Ripken is the embodiment of consistency. His record stands at 2,632 consecutive games played without missing a single game.

Ripken’s role appears to be more of a marketing ploy than anything. However, in a statement from DraftKings, Ripken’s role could have many different parts.

“He will lend strategic insights to the board of directors and Chief Executive Officer on key company initiatives and will become a DraftKings equity holder,” the company said in a statement on Thursday.

It is unlikely that Ripken will play a significant role in the decision-making for a major company like DraftKings. Furthermore, the announcement includes Ripken being an equity holder for DraftKings.

DraftKings Eyes Maryland Sports Betting Market Share

This move is understandably going to have plenty of market appeal. Maryland recently legalized sports betting on the November voting ballot. The expectation is that legal sports betting will launch in the state towards the end of 2021.

Since Ripken is one of the most notorious athletes in the history of Maryland sports – it is understandable that they want to develop a relationship with him. Ripken is extremely active within the community. He currently runs Ripken Baseball for youths in Aberdeen, Maryland.

Ripken created a beautiful two-thirds scale replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The impressive feat is perfect for kids to learn the game. At the end of his career, Ripken started the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation for his father. The mission has always been to, “Transform Communities and Change Kids’ Lives.”

Ripken is a role model throughout the country and an ambassador of baseball. He is an invaluable piece to the DraftKings and MLB sports betting puzzle.

When sports betting does launch in Maryland, Ripken will surely play a big part. The definition of honor and consistency, Ripken is exactly the type of person DraftKings wants representing their brand.
