Now that the 2022-23 season is in the books, college football bettors can focus on the CFP National Championship Opening Odds 2023-24. Georgia, of course, has opened as the favorite, and if the Bulldogs go on to win it all again, they’ll make history. Only one other team has three-peated as college football national champions (Minnesota, 1934-36).

Georgia’s opening odds of winning the CFP national championship give them a 21.05-26.67% chance of joining the Golden Gophers in that exclusive club.

Several factors could cause these futures odds to change during the offseason. In addition to players in the transfer portal who have yet to find a new home, spring practice injuries, coaching changes, etc., are certain to occur.

But a few programs are always in national championship discussions.

Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia, for example, all start at the top of oddsboards. We expect them to be the top contenders until they prove differently. But each will have some serious issues to address during the offseason:

  • Each will have a first-year starting quarterback.
  • Alabama has offensive line issues and will lose several players to the NFL.
  • Georgia has some roster holes to fill with 14 seniors, two grad transfers, and several juniors who could declare for the NFL Draft following the national championship game.
  • Ohio State needs to improve its secondary and fill the holes left by players leaving early for the draft.

Michigan appears to be in good shape heading into next season, but the fallout from an NCAA recruiting violations investigation could derail their title hopes. If USC can reload via the transfer portal like it did last year, the Trojans could become a contender once again, as well.

But the real fun at this time of year is theorizing which college football teams could rise from obscurity and possibly win it all.

CFP National Championship Odds: Dark Horses and Longshots

A lot has to go right for a dark horse or longshot to rise and become a contender. Can they get some help from the transfer portal? Will they hire the right coaches? Can they develop players and turn them from rising stars with potential to bona fide superstars?

Only time will tell who can, but the following teams are worth keeping an eye on. Some might even be worth putting a few bucks on while their odds are nice and long. Let’s take a look at some of the teams that top college football betting sites favor:

Florida State

Quarterback Jordan Travis is an up-and-coming talent that will almost certainly be in the Heisman conversation to start the 2023 season. He’ll have a solid group of skill-position guys to work with and an offensive line getting some help from the transfer portal. The bulk of the defense returns, but it will need to take a step forward to get the Seminoles into the playoff.

Notre Dame

Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame team had some growing pains in his first season, but they were one of the better teams in the nation by the end of the season. With a bevy of talent returning on both sides of the ball and Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman transferring in, the Fighting Irish could undoubtedly be in the national championship conversation in 2023.

LSU

Brian Kelly did an incredible job in his first season with the Tigers. He’ll have a Heisman contender in Jayden Daniels at quarterback, and he’ll have some great skill position players coming back to work with. The offensive line needs to improve and should, with the starting five expected to return.

Washington

The Huskies were one of the most improved teams in the nation in 2022, going from 4-8 in ’21 to 11-2. Michael Penix Jr. gives Washington a Heisman contender at quarterback. He’ll have several solid weapons coming back, but the offensive line could use some work.

Oregon

The Ducks need a few players to step up on the defensive side of the ball. But with Bo Nix coming back, the offense stands to be as potent as ever.

TCU

The Horned Frogs will lose a lot of talent to the NFL and graduation, but they have already gained a few players from the transfer portal and will probably gain a few more after the national championship game. Head Coach Sonny Dykes has his work cut out for him. But with the job he did with the team in 2022, it is clear he’s up to the task.

College Football National Championship Odds History

While it may make sense to bet on the favorite, Georgia, to win it all, history says otherwise. Since 2001, only two preseason favorites went on to win the national championship (Alabama in 2017 and USC in 2004). However, more often than not, the eventual champion was someone viewed as a potential contender.

2003LSU+4000Oklahoma (+450)
2002Ohio State+1900Miami (+350)
2001Miami+500Florida (+400)

During the CFP Era (2014-present), the team winning it all had odds of +700 or shorter prior to Week 1 seven times. But that does not mean there is no chance a contender will emerge from nowhere. LSU certainly did in 2019, and Ohio State was an unexpected one in 2014.

Since 2001, the eventual champ had +1000 odds or higher eight times. However, it may be wishful thinking to bet on someone with odds higher than +5000. No champ since 2001 started the season with odds higher than +5000.
