The Champions League matches scheduled for Wednesday lack the big names that were on display in Paris on Tuesday when Bayern defeated Paris St. Germain, but there’s still plenty of intrigue surrounding the odds, props, and best bets for Borussia Dortmund-Chelsea and Club Brugge-Benfica.

Club Brugge is a heavy home underdog against Benfica. Oddsmakers expect a close match between Chelsea, which completed a historic shopping spree during the winter transfer window, and Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund vs. Chelsea Analysis

Chelsea is probably the hardest team in Europe to predict right now. Manager Graham Potter has the luxury of choosing between multiple high-caliber players at almost every position. Until he knows who’s in his first-choice XI, though — and how he wants to line up — that’s a bug, not a feature.

Since American Owner Todd Boehly’s team spent nearly $400 million on new players in January — including Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for $130 million and Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk for $107 million — Chelsea have yet to click. Their first match with their new complement of players was a 0-0 home draw against seventh-place Fulham on Feb. 3, and they also drew 16th-place (and relegation-threatened) West Ham in their next match on Feb. 11.

While it’s possible everything will click into place as soon as Wednesday in front of Dortmund’s famed Yellow Wall, that doesn’t feel like a safe bet at the moment.

Can Dortmund Stay Hot at Home?

Borussia Dortmund are undefeated since the Bundesliga returned from its break for the World Cup in late January. The German side’s hot streak includes five wins in the Bundesliga and a 2-1 win over VfL Bochum in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 on Feb. 8. None of those victories came against Bundesliga title contenders Bayern Munich and Union Berlin, but Dortmund did rout 4th-place Freiburg 5-1 on Feb. 4.

Dortmund are in form, and their mix of young stars (including Jude Bellingham, USMNTer Giovanni Reyna, and Karim Adeyemi) and established veterans (including Sebastien Haller and Niklas Sule) will give Chelsea all they can handle.

Given how these teams have fared over the last few weeks, Dortmund’s status as the slight favorite at home makes sense.

Club Brugge-Benfica Analysis

If you’re not familiar with the top players on these teams (especially for host Club Brugge), that’s understandable. While Benfica’s biggest names are not yet superstars — though 21-year-old Goncalo Ramos turned heads at the World Cup — they do boast a handful of recognizable up-and-comers, including Ramos and Gonçalo Guedes.

Benfica’s proven track record in terms of player development is good reason to respect their young players, even before they’ve emerged as stars. Fernandez is the latest player to leave Benfica on a blockbuster move to a top European club, following Liverpool F Darwin Núñez, Argentine 2022 World Cup winner Angel di Maria, and Man City stars Ruben Dias and Ederson, to name a few.

Whether this squad contains any players poised for such a move is unclear, but Benfica were undeniably impressive in Champions League group play, edging not only PSG but also Juventus to finish in first place in Group H.

They’ve also been outstanding domestically this season, with a record of 17-2-1 on 51 goals scored, compared to only 12 allowed. And while they’ve only played two games since losing Fernandez to Chelsea, they’ve hardly skipped a beat so far, winning both matches 3-0.

It all adds up to a strong case that they’ll cruise past Club Brugge — even on the road — especially considering Brugge is in fourth place in the Belgian Pro League.

Brugge-Benfica Total

At DraftKings, the total is 2.5, with Over at -115 and Under at -110.
