Plus, Syl says bet early, often

Remember be nice to old people. As we get up in years and our memory is just not as good and we do tend to make a mistake or two such as giving the wrong betting numbers, betting the wrong race, filling out a parlay card wrong or as I did last week, having Connecticut opening up with Ohio State but they opened up with Michigan and I knew that but somehow the Buckeyes came out of my mind as I penned my article.

So let me get this right, the Steelers are really 2-0 with no Big Ben and if somehow they can pull off a win this week against upstart Tampa Bay in what shapes up as a real defensive war they will be heading home 3-0 to face the real low scoring Ravens and somehow if they can pull that win off they will be 4-0 with Big Ben eligible to return.

If they are 4-0, I say keep Ben on the bench and someone please tell the old guy in Minnesota to retire for good.

One good thing happened last week in the college games and that was my best bet Arizona beating Iowa but they did try and blow it late, so let’s get to this week’s selections.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Thursday, Sept. 23

Miami Florida -4 at Pittsburgh 4:45 p.m. ESPN: “The Stache” hosts the “U”! After throwing four interceptions against Ohio State Jacory Harris has little confidence and doubt the week off will help. PITT +4

Friday, Sept. 24

TCU -17 at SMU 5 p.m. ESPN: The Horned Frogs can score and want to hold on to their No. 5 ranking but believe the Mustangs can hang and may have been looking ahead a little last week and for trend players SMU has covered five straight games before playing Rice and that is who they play next week. SMU +17

Saturday, Sept. 25

Central Michigan +7 at Northwestern 9 a.m.: Bet against any “Directional” school in Michigan. NORTHWESTERN -7

Bowling Green +24 at Michigan 9 a.m.: Michigan pulled it out late against a tough Massachusetts group 42-37 and now face the Green Falcons who have covered all three of their games so far this year. BOWLING GREEN +24

Ball State +28 at Iowa 9 p.m.: The Cardinals playing in their second straight road game must face an angry bunch of Hawkeyes. IOWA -28

Temple +17 at Penn State 12:30 p.m. (note time change): The Owls have managed to score a total of 19 points in five meetings against the Lions, Joe Pa may just shut them out. PENN STATE -17

NC State +9½ at Georgia Tech 9 a.m.: Watching the Wolf Pack play, they have made me a believer. NC STATE +9½

Wake Forest +18 at Florida State 9 a.m.: The Demon Deacons gave up 48 points to Duke and 68 last week at Stanford and most likely another 50 this week. FLORIDA STATE -18

Army +6½ at Duke 12 p.m. (note time change): The same thing can be said about the Blue Devils as we stated about Wake but Duke can’t stop a flea as they gave up 27 to Elon, 54 to Wake and 62 last week at Alabama. ARMY +6½

Air Force -12 at Wyoming 11 a.m.: The “Force” might be in let down mode after big effort at Oklahoma and the Cowboys give their best in this game. WYOMING +12

Alabama -7 at Arkansas 12:30 p.m.: Tide is the cream of the South and catch the Razorbacks off big win against Georgia. ALABAMA -7

Oregon State +17 at Boise State 12:30 p.m.: Broncos focused and on a mission and look unbeatable on the blue carpet, Boise on the blue. BOISE STATE -17

California +4½ at Arizona 7 p.m. (note time change): The first revenge game for the Wildcats is in the book and now we get to revenge game #2 as “Zona” gets even from last year’s 24-16 loss at Cal. ARIZONA -4½

UCLA +16 1/2 at Texas 12:30 PM ABC: There will be a total on this game and we will bet under as the Longhorn defense comes to play and Texas has played its first three games under the total. UNDER

Idaho -7 at Colorado State 1 p.m.: The Vandals are starting on the same roll this year as they did last year when they covered their first seven games, and on the other side of the coin when one team can’t score always bet the other team as the Rams have scored 3, 6 and 10. IDAHO -7

Nevada -2½ at BYU 3 p.m. MTN: I am a big fan of tall’ strong, thin and strong armed QB’s that can also run and Colin Kaepernick fits the bill in the “Pistol” offense. The Wolf Pack will be firing way to many rounds for BYU to handle. NEVADA -2½

Akron +21 at Indiana 4 p.m.BIG TEN TV: The Hoosiers have an offense that can put up some numbers while the “Zips” have zip for an offense and are just a bad team. INDIANA -21

South Carolina +2½ at Auburn 4:45 p.m. (note time change): Big SEC matchup, we will stick wth the “ol ball coach” Steve Spurrier and take the Gamecocks. SOUTH CAROLINA +2½

West Virginia +7 at LSU 6 p.m. (note time change): There is nothing like a Saturday night game in the Bayou, Tiger Stadium will be rocking along with my buddy Syl Friedman that told me bet this game early as soon as the money gets here, OK Syl. LSU -7

New Mexico +8 at UNLV 7 p.m. MTN: That is correct the Rebs are the chalk so how bad are the Lobos, BAD I say, the Rebs get a needed win. UNLV -8

Oregon -11½ at Arizona State 7:30 p.m. FSN TV: The Ducks have really been quacking scoring 72, 48 and 69 last week as they are trying to make a big point. OREGON -11½
