Cowboys vs. 49ers Analysis and Prediction
Sunday night’s game in San Francisco should have a playoff atmosphere thanks to the high expectations around both of these teams.
In LB Micah Parsons, who leads an outstanding defense, RB Tony Pollard, WR CeeDee Lamb, and a strong offensive line, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has one of the best supporting casts in the league. That means that most weeks, as long as Prescott is serviceable, Dallas can win. This week will be a different story, though. The 49ers will likely force Prescott to beat them, and whether he’s up to the challenge will determine whether Dallas can pull the upset.
Dallas struggled offensively against San Francisco in the playoffs in both 2021 and 2022, with the Cowboys losing 23-17 to SF at home in ’21 and 19-12 last year on the road. The Niners limited Prescott to less than 6 yards per attempt in both those meetings, and he’s thrown for two TDS, been picked off three times, and sacked six times in those two games.
The Cowboys’ D will also have a difficult task on Sunday against a balanced 49ers offense led by Christian McCaffrey, who has been unstoppable through four games. Against Arizona in Week 4, McCaffrey turned 27 touches (20 rushes, seven catches) into 177 yards of offense and four TDs, and he’s on pace for easily the best statistical season of his career. Even for defenses that manage to contain McCaffrey, the 49ers boast several other hard-to-defend weapons in Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle.
Barring a suffocating performance from the Dallas defense — which is without star corner Trevon Diggs but still has plenty of talent all over the field, from Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence up front to corners Stephon Gilmore and DaRon Bland on the back end — the 49ers should be able to score enough to stay undefeated in a low-scoring game. Given the total points scored in these teams’ recent playoff matchups was 40 in ’21 and 31 last January, the 49ers (spread) and the Under look like the safest plays.
Pick: 49ers (-3.5 at time of publishing), Under (45 at time of publishing)
