Gaming Today is featuring a new column this football season!
My name is Calli, a writer at Gaming Today, and my passion for football comes from my dad. Every season, my dad and I make weekly picks on which NFL team we think will win. We thought it would be fun to turn it into a weekly column, especially since my dad is a die-hard Raiders fan and I happen to be a huge Chiefs fan. (That is a story for another time…)
This is all for fun, except when the Raiders play the Chiefs. We then make a small friendly wager on the game, so make sure to check out those rival weeks.
How Does It Work?
It is pretty simple. I make picks based on my gut feeling where my dad makes picks based on the odds from top sportsbooks. Most of the time, we do have the same picks. But there are a few games each week where we disagree. Those are the games I will be highlighting.Of course, at the end of every column, Gaming Today’s odds table for every game will be included! And as the season gets rolling, our records will be posted each week.
Feel free to play along and keep track of your own picks!
Week 1 Picks
I was surprised that my dad and I actually disagreed on six games this week. The majority of the teams we both think will win this week have the best sports betting odds. In fact, we both might even pick some of these teams to put on a parlay bet.
We both picked the following teams to get a W:
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Jacksonville Jaguars
- Minnesota Vikings
- Buffalo Bills
- San Francisco 49ers
- Seattle Seahawks
- Kansas City Chiefs (good pick, dad!)
- Denver Broncos
- Green Bay Packers
- Los Angeles Rams
As for the games that we don’t agree on, there are some teams I am going with that aren’t favored by sportsbook apps, but I have my reasons. And of course, my dad had to choose his two teams to win, even though they are the underdogs.
New York Jets at Carolina Panthers
Dad picked the Panthers, probably because of Christian McCaffrey returning after being injured last season. But right guard John Miller is out for the game because of Covid, which might hurt quarterback Sam Darnold’s protection. And with Sam Darnold on a new team this year taking on his old team, there could be some jitters there. The sportsbooks have the Panthers as the favorite, but I am going with the New York Jets.
This is because I think Zach Wilson is going to surprise us all, along with running back Tevin Coleman and the rest of the Jets. I might be way off on this pick, but I just have a feeling that the Jets are going to pull off the win.
Arizona Cardinals at Tennessee Titans
Dad and I are both Arizona fans with the Cardinals as our second favorite team. But I can’t pick them this week, even though dad did.
The Titans are the favorite and I think the Cardinals will be worth betting on at some point, but taking on the Titans in Tennessee in week 1 will be too much for them to handle. Not sure the defense can stop Derrick Henry enough or if Kyler Murray and the offense can put up enough points to keep up with the Titans. Sorry Bird Gang, I am taking the Titans on this one.
Los Angeles Chargers at Washington Football Team
I hate picking a Chiefs’ division rival, but I think the Chargers are going to be good this year and will bring home a win in the first week. Dad went with the Washington Football Team, who are slight underdogs in the game.
Even though Washington has Fitzmagic as quarterback now with supporting cast Antonia Gibson and Chase Young, who will both have breakout years, I just don’t think they have what it takes to beat Justin Herbert, Keean Allen, and Joey Bosa. It is going to be a great game that will end up close, but I think the Chargers get it done.
Philadelphia Eagles at Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are the favorite to win and that is probably why dad picked them. But I think the Falcons are going to be a let down this season, even with Matt Ryan, Kyle Pitts, and Calvin Ridley.
As for the Eagles, rookie DeVonta Smith is going to be a game changer. Add in Miles Sanders and Jason Kelce to the mix, I think the team has what it needs to beat the Falcons in week 1. I am still unsure how I feel about Jalen Hurts at quarterback, but he could surprise me.
Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots
The Dolphins are the underdogs, but I think they will be able to stop the Patriots in week 1. Dad went with New England, however, I don’t have that much faith in Mac Jones for some reason. After the Patriots released Cam Newton and put all their eggs in the Jones basket, I just got a bad feeling about it all.
Miami is a lot better than people give them credit for and I think quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can lead the team to a winning record this season, starting with a week 1 win.
Baltimore Ravens at Las Vegas Raiders
It doesn’t matter if the Raiders were a 50 point underdog, dad would still pick them. So, it is no surprise he picked the Raiders in the Monday Night Football match up against the Ravens.
Even though the game is in Las Vegas and I have no doubt the Black Hole will be louder than ever, I just don’t think quarterback Derek Carr can keep up with the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson. Or their defense. I do think it is going to be a closer game than many think, but the Ravens will be too strong to let the Raiders win this one.
Week 1 Games To Watch
Of course, Thursday Night Football is the 2021-2022 season opener, so that is a must-watch, especially with Dak Prescott returning after an injury to lead the Dallas Cowboys. The game will be back where the Super Bowl took place, in Tampa Bay. With 22 starters from the Super Bowl all returning to the Buccaneers, they are already a favorite to win the Super Bowl. Both my dad and I are picking the Bucs over the Cowboys and might even include this game on a parlay bet.
There is only one Monday Night Football game this year, where usually we get spoiled and get a double-header in week 1. But this one will be a big game for the Raiders and my dad. You can expect the game to be packed, as it is the first regular season where fans can attend the Las Vegas Raiders’ new state-of-the-art stadium. The Raiders will be hosting Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. This is a tough AFC battle for the Raiders, but with Raven’s number one running back out for the season, J.K. Dobbins, the Raiders might be able to start off the season 1-0. We all know my dad picked the Raiders, but I am going to have to go with the Ravens on this one. Sorry, dad!
