Del Mar announced Wednesday it has canceled racing for this weekend (July 17-19) due to multiple positive tests for coronavirus among the local jockey colony.

Victor Espinoza was taken off his mount on opening day last Friday after he took it upon himself to be tested for the coronavirus and the results came back positive. Flavien Prat went to Keeneland to ride last Saturday, returned on Sunday, and was required by Del Mar to take a coronavirus test before being allowed to ride that afternoon. That test also came back positive and he was removed from his mounts.

Tuesday, Del Mar tested the entire jockey colony and the results that came back Wednesday morning included multiple positives, including current leading jockey Umberto Rispoli.

As of now, Del Mar plans to resume racing on July 24. Del Mar conducted a spectator-free racing opening week as requested by the San Diego public health department.

Also on Wednesday, the stewards at Oaklawn Park announced that Bob Baffert-trained Arkansas Derby winner Charlatan and Oaklawn Park Allowance winner Gamine have been disqualified from their May 2 victories due to a positive test for lidocaine. Purses for those victories will be forfeited and Baffert has been handed a 15-day suspension that starts on August 1. Baffert is scheduled to start Uncle Chuck in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 8.
