Saturday will have a fascinating matchup of the Denver Nuggets versus the Portland Trail Blazers. Two teams that expect to make deep runs in the playoffs and are even considered dark horses for the NBA title. The exact same fixture was played in 2019, in the Western Conference Semi-Finals, though both teams have undergone drastic changes since then.

The game is poised to be a high-scoring, high-tempo blitz of offense versus offense, facing off two of the best-attacking units of the NBA on the backs of two of the best players of the NBA this season – with plenty of player drama to go around, too.

The 2019 Semi-Final is not the only history between the two franchises in recent times – Portland center Jusuf Nurkic was traded to Portland by the Nuggets in 2017, to make way for the then up-and-coming Nikola Jokic. On Saturday it will Nurkic’s chance to prove to the Trail Blazers that they made a mistake, an uphill task but one that Nurkic will undoubtedly be raring to do.

Portland Trail Blazers

Portland’s season has suffered from injuries to Nurkic and CJ McCollum, both of whom have since recovered and are raring to leave their marks on the playoffs. Since their return, the Trail Blazers have looked every bit the part of a title-contending side, winning 10 out of 12 with stellar offensive records. The team will also be extra motivated by rumors that coach Terry Stotts is teetering on the verge of being fired, with a successful postseason showing seemingly his only chance at redemption. Damian Lillard will naturally be the one to watch, the talented point guard having stepped up time and again to keep Portland’s challenge afloat.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets, meanwhile, have had a rougher time. Despite looking like title favorites early on, a brutal ACL injury to Jamal Murray resulted in many disappointments. The Denver side will now be resting their hopes entirely on the able shoulders of Jokic, the likely NBA MVP this season who’s put up an absolutely astonishing average of 26-11-8 on 57/39/87 shooting splits in pursuit of the playoffs.

With many of the Nuggets’ dream starters injured or out of form, Portland might seem like favorites for the series. But it’s never wise to count out miracles from Jokic, who has shown this season that he can move mountains alone.

This is likely to be a very exciting match regardless of the outcome, and every NBA fan will be looking forward to the explosive action and drama that accompanies the greatest postseason games.
