From time to time I head out of Las Vegas for my weekly food column and such is the case this week. If you are a baseball fan I highly recommend heading to Arizona to catch some Spring Training action.

If you take, the 5 hour drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix you can catch 15 different teams in action in the Cactus League. All of the teams play in and around the greater Phoenix area so you can see a different team everyday. This is the ultimate guys road trip and this was my third year making the trip. Bryan Leonard, who has been going for years, invited me to join him 3 years ago and we have been going ever since.

What’s better than catching some baseball in the afternoon then eating and drinking at night only to get up and do it all over again the next day? This trip we found a restaurant that if you are a true sports fan you have to check out.

Don & Charlie’s is located at 7501 East Camelback Road, Scottsdale, Ariz. This restaurant has wall-to-wall sports memorabilia covering every sport. Just the autographed baseball section alone will blow you away.

There are signed jerseys, helmets, shoes, bats – you name it they have it. Without a reservation, chances are you will be waiting for a table so checking out all the sports items passes the time. If you went to Don & Charlie’s just for drinks and the collection you would be happy but the food will make you even happier.

On this visit there were six of us and we ordered a wide variety of food. We started with the Onion Strings, Cheese Toast, Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip. Personally, I really enjoyed the cheese toast and spinach and artichoke dip.

Next up: a wide variety from burgers to salmon and steaks. I ordered the Parmesan Crusted N.Y. Steak served with mushrooms and onion strings. Having the steak covered in a Parmesan crust gave it a unique flavor while locking in the juices of the steak itself. I was quite pleased with my steak.

Also, I highly recommend their Wedge Salad with their house-made Creamy Garlic dressing. Trust me, you will thank me later for this one.

On my next visit I will be ordering the Baby Back Ribs. Several tables around us were eating them and they looked fantastic.

For dessert I ordered the Crème Brulée, which may have been the best I have ever had. The hard, dark chocolate center put this crème brulée over the top.

Our waitress was very nice, extremely helpful with the menu and suggestions and kept our table filled with drinks. After an afternoon in the hot sun we kept her busy just with our drinks alone.

Going to Spring Training is a must-do trip if you are a baseball fan. Being in Phoenix makes it a really easy road trip. Look up Don & Charlie’s as I give them 3.75 Forks.
