If you haven’t been downtown lately you won’t recognize how things have changed.

Over the last 18 to 24 months we have seen the downtown area get quite a facelift, most notably the area around 3rd Street. The newest addition to the downtown scene was the opening a few months ago of the Downtown Grand Hotel & Casino. It is the centerpiece of 3rd Street.

The Downtown Grand is trying to attract Las Vegas locals into their property and during the month of January is a great time for locals to come in and check out the property. They are offering some great deals on room rates.

Sometimes it’s just fun to play tourist and stay at a casino, have a nice dinner catch a show and gamble. It’s always fun to be able to have a good time without having to worry about driving home.

The Downtown Grand is also offering a great deal to locals to come and try their many restaurants. If you have a Players Card and show your local ID you will receive 50% off your meal in any of their restaurants.

This past Saturday I went to Stewart + Ogden located inside the Downtown Grand. Stewart + Ogden is an American diner serving breakfast and lunch. It then transforms itself into a bistro for dinner. On my visit I started off with a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer.

The shrimp were excellent but I will admit the cocktail sauce was a little bland as it could of used a tad more horseradish. I like my cocktail sauce to have a little kick to it. Next up was a salad and I went with the baby spinach with warm bacon dressing. I enjoyed my salad as I love a good warm bacon dressing. Now I was ready to move on to my entrée.

Stewart + Ogden has a wide selection from comfort foods like the Dr. Pepper Pot Roast or their Chicken Pot Pie to hearty steaks. I went with their Rib Eye Steak dinner, which at $28 is bargain enough. But their January special – 50% off for locals – makes it a steal at just $14!

The rib eye is served with a potato and broccoli. I went with their shoestring fries, which I highly recommend. My rib eye was cooked to perfection and very flavorful.

All the items on the menu are modestly priced. They have a half roasted chicken for $12 and roasted salmon for $17. The highest priced menu item is their 8 oz. filet checking in at $31. That’s a far cry from what you would pay dining on the Strip, and then with the 50% off during January you really can’t beat the deals.

I was too full for dessert but they had several tempting items that caught my eye, especially Butter Brioche Bread Pudding with a raisin rum sauce. You could add a bananas foster sauce for an additional $2, which will be the way I go on my next visit.
