The latest installment of one of the best rivalries in college sports tips off Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Eastern in Chapel Hill, as No. 3 North Carolina welcomes No. 7 Duke to the Dean E. Smith Center.

A year ago, the Blue Devils finished the regular season in third place in the ACC (but won the conference tournament), and the Tar Heels missed the NCAA Tournament after going just 11-9 in the league, but both have returned to form in 2023-24.

The battle for the ACC regular season title is currently a two-horse race between these top-10 teams, and Saturday night’s game is crucial for the Devils’ hopes of closing the gap on the Heels. UNC is currently heavily favored to win the ACC at , while Duke is .

Duke Blue Devils (16-4, 10-9-1 ATS)

Duke started this season with high expectations thanks to the return of likely 2024 NBA first-round picks Kyle Filipowski and Tyrese Proctor after promising freshman campaigns by both players. Second-year coach Jon Scheyer’s team enters Saturday night’s game on a roll, with wins in 11 of its last 12 games dating back to early December.

Filipowski has been dominant inside, averaging 17.5 points and 8.7 rebounds. Four of Duke’s five starters — Filipowski, Proctor, Mark Mitchell, and senior Jeremy Roach — played significant minutes last year, and all four, plus freshman Jared McCain, average at least 10 points per game. Saturday night will be by far Duke’s toughest test to date in the ACC, but Duke did play a challenging nonconference schedule that included No. 11 Arizona and No. 18 Baylor.

North Carolina Tar Heels (17-4, 13-8 ATS)

The Heels have dominated ACC play after a disappointing showing in ’22-23. This year’s team is coming off an upset road loss to Georgia Tech that spolled an undefeated start in conference play, but still looks well on its way to a regular season ACC title. Veteran guard RJ Davis leads a veteran starting five featuring three seniors in Davis, big man Armando Bacot, and fifth-senior Cormac Ryan.

The latter is one of two transfers in the starting lineup, along with Harrison Ingram, for a balanced squad that is 9-1 in the league, with seven of those wins coming by double digits. In fact, the only UNC victories by single digits both came against Florida State.

Duke vs North Carolina Odds and Prediction: Blue Devils to Cover

Rivalry games are always tough to predict, and Duke-UNC games are no exception. This matchup took on added intrigue when UNC (9-1 in the ACC) stumbled on the road earlier this week. Now, a UNC team that was 9-0 a week ago is at risk of finding itself just a half game ahead of Duke (7-2 in the ACC) in the conference standings if the Devils win on Saturday night.

With both teams coming off down years — at least by their standards — this game, with both teams ranked in the top 10 in the country, is easily the biggest in this rivalry since the blockbuster Final Four matchup between Coach K’s last Duke squad and UNC in 2022.

As for what to expect on Saturday night, Duke getting 5 points or more makes the Devils tempting road underdogs in the toughest game either of these teams have played since December.

Pick: Duke (+5.5 at time of publishing)
