This past Saturday I was doing what I usually do during football season and that’s watching games at a sports book. That’s my norm. There was something different, though, about this Saturday – I had won all my plays!

I also was very happy to see my hometown Pittsburgh Steelers roll the Buffalo Bills in a preseason game. As Jay Trotter said in the movie “Let it Ride,” I was having a very good day!

Now it was time to turn my attention from wagers to food. You work up a man-size appetite after a day of rooting in all your wagers. When I think big appetite, there usually are images of beef involved. Yes, we’re talking steak.

I was feeling old school so my decision was to go to the Golden Steer Steakhouse (308 W. Sahara Ave.) just off the famed Las Vegas Strip. The Golden Steer first opened in 1958. It has been a part of the Las Vegas scene for more than five decades.

The minute you walk through the doors you see and feel the old school vibe as there is a piano player in the bar belting out requests. Why is it that everyone always asks the piano player to play Billy Joel’s “Piano Man?”

Then you look around and notice all the waiters wearing tuxedos. Yes, this is old school at its best. Enough, though, with the décor. Let’s get down to business and talk about the food.

The Golden Steer offers up Caesar Salad prepared tableside. It’s a nice romantic touch when you are with your lady, but if you’re with a group of guys it’s not quite the same. I started my evening with a nice bowl of Lobster Bisque that was quite tasty, but could have used a few more pieces of lobster floating in the bisque. Still, it was very good.

Next is the steak choice. I have very high standards when it comes to meat as my dad owned a meat packing plant. Being raised by a butcher has made me very particular about my steaks. I went for the most flavorful steak, that being the Bone-In Rib Eye. This one weighed in at 20 oz. and looked to be a formidable opponent for dinner.

The steak was cooked to perfection. As I took the first cut, the juices ran out onto my plate just the way it should. The rib eye was flavorful and tasty. I ordered a baked potato on the side. It arrived with the steak looking like the size of Idaho itself.

The Golden Steer lays claim to having the biggest baked potatos in Las Vegas. I can say if there is a place with bigger ones, I haven’t found it yet.

My other side dish was creamed corn. I have to say this was the only part of my meal I didn’t like. I couldn’t put my finger on what the spice was they added, but it made it very sweet. So I would pass on the creamed corn unless you like it sweet.

The people at the table next to me had fresh asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce. I wish I had gone that route instead. But the meal was still worth 3 1/2 forks.
