England lived up to expectations in group play in Qatar, comfortably topping Group B with blowout wins over Iran and Wales sandwiched around a draw with USA. For England, the tournament is now truly getting started, as expectations are sky-high for a side that reached the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020 last summer. Three Lions are currently among the 2022 World Cup favorites at +900 odds on DraftKings.

Senegal are one of the surprises of group play after advancing from Group A with wins over Qatar and Ecuador after a loss to the Netherlands in their opener. Senegal are still alive despite playing without arguably their best, most important player, Bayern Munich F Sadio Mane. They have the fourth-longest odds of any team in the Round of 16 to win the World Cup at +10000 (100-to-1).

In Gaming Today’s breakdown of England vs. Senegal odds, props, and predictions, we examine the Round of 16 matchup.

Moneyline

The three-way moneyline prices apply only to what the scoreboard reads after 90 minutes of regulation (including stoppage time). That means that if you bet England (or Senegal) to win, and they do advance in overtime or on PKs, your bet still goes down as a loss since the game was tied at the end of regulation.

If you think one side will advance in knockout play, but fear it might happen after the match is tied through 90 minutes, take a look at odds to advance. For this match, England are -390 to advance, while Senegal are +300 on DraftKings. At Fanduel, the “to advance” prices are England -550 and Senegal +370, while BetRivers offers England -400, Senegal +300.

Total

The total is set at 2.5 goals, with the Over priced at +130 on DraftKings, while the Under is -165. With England averaging three goals a game in group play – despite being shut out by USA – there’s good value with Over 2.5 Goals at +130.

England vs. Senegal: World Cup History

England’s appearances in the World Cup are seemingly always memorable, and 2018 was no exception. Harry Kane and Co.’s run to the semifinals, where they lost to eventual runner-up Croatia, did not lack for drama. The same could be said for England’s journey to the final of Euro 2020 last summer against Italy.

England’s World Cup history includes a trophy in 1966, but the closest it has been since is the semifinals.

This year marks just the third time Senegal have qualifed for the World Cup. In 2002, they reached the quarterfinals in their World Cup debut, and they failed to advance from group play in 2018.

England and Senegal have never met in the World Cup.

England Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

England are heavily favored to make another deep run this year after their run to the semifinals at the 2018 World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s side showed their high ceiling against Iran (England won 6-2) and Wales (England won 3-0). While they appeared beatable against USA, that might have been because they were satisfied with a draw.

For England opponents, the players Southgate can bring off the bench are as scary as the starters in several positions. Marcus Rashford scored within seconds of coming on against Iran, Phil Foden has been outstanding as a sub, and Jack Grealish is another quality piece who is unlikely to start.

Roster

England, Brazil, and France are among the deepest teams in the tournament. A big advantage for England is their experience in big moments. Harry Kane has a Golden Boot to his name from 2018, and players who scored goals in elimination games in 2018 include center back Harry Maguire and right back Kieran Trippier. As far as the combination of talent and big-game experience go, England is second only to 2018 champions France, if anyone.

Injuries

England appears to be healthy going into their clash with Senegal.

Senegal Roster, Injuries, and Betting News

Senegal is not the only team in the Round of 16 despite low expectations pre-World Cup, but their success without Mane has been one of the best stories of the tournament. Their prospects looked bleak after a loss to Netherlands in their first match of the World Cup, but Senegal quickly recovered, beating Qatar 3-1 and Ecuador 2-1 to earn a Round of 16 matchup with England.

Roster

At this point in the tournament, it’s disrespectful to the players who are healthy to keep highlighting the absence of Mane. So let’s highlight the strong play Senegal got in Group A from forwards Boulaye Dia and Ismaila Sarr. The back line has been anchored — as expected — by captain Kalidou Koulibaly, and his Chelsea teammate, keeper Edouard Mendy.

Injuries

As you may have heard, Mane’s injury dealt Senegal a tough blow before the tournament started. Against England, they’ll also sorely miss Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. The former PSG midfielder is missing the England match after getting two yellow cards in group play.

England vs. Senegal Prediction: England 2, Senegal 0

There’s not a ton to break down here. Senegal deserves props for what it did in Group A, and this will by no means be a cakewalk for England. But the talent gap between these rosters is big enough that England should control this match, if not dominate it. Senegal have a shot to pull the upset if Mendy is incredible, but it’s hard to see them keeping up for 90 minutes, especially with Gueye out of the picture.

It should not shock fans if this one is close or tied after halftime, but it feels like a matter of not if, but when England will get the goals it needs to win its third match of the tournament without having to sweat out stoppage time.

Here are two other bets on DraftKings worth checking out:

  •  Half time/Full Time — England/England: +140
  • England win and Under 3.5 Goals: -125
