The Lionel Messi show is going on the road for the first time since the FIFA World Cup winner’s move to MLS club Inter Miami. As the Leagues Cup Round of 16 begins, we look at FC Dallas vs. Inter Miami odds and Lionel Messi props, and we offer a few predictions on Sunday night’s match.
Inter Miami looks like a completely different team since the arrival of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and reigning Best FIFA Men’s Player. Oddsmakers immediately took notice of the Argentine’s move to the United States, and odds are constantly changing as he has scored in three consecutive matches.
The South Florida club not only added the recent Paris Saint-Germain star but also two of his former FC Barcelona teammates in Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. A sold-out match in the suburbs of Dallas awaits, as U.S. men’s national team forward Jesus Ferreira and FC Dallas hope to provide the first upset of the Messi MLS era.

FC Dallas Leagues Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Owned by the same Hunt family that has seen its Kansas City Chiefs win two of the last four Super Bowls, FC Dallas has not shared the same success as its NFL counterparts. One of the original MLS clubs since the league’s inaugural 1996 season, FC Dallas has never won an MLS Cup, despite having promising seasons in the 2010s. The club is known for having one of the best soccer academies in the United States, and being one of the best sellers of talent in the league, but has yet to translate that success with youth into a championship.
Toyota Stadium, in the suburb of Frisco, is the team’s home ground and seats 19,096 for soccer matches – making for a short supply of tickets for Sunday’s match that are on re-sale from the mid-hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Spanish coach Nico Estévez, a former youth manager at Valencia and ex-U.S. men’s national team assistant, is in his second full season with the club. FCD is 6W-3L-2T at home this season and ranks 8th in the Western Conference.
Roster
U.S. men’s national team forward Jesus Ferreira leads the FC Dallas attack with 10 league goals. Wingers Bernard Kamungo and Jáder Obrian have accompanied Ferreira in the preferred 4-3-3 formation.
Young Argentine Alan Velasco is the club’s most expensive-ever signing, bought from Independiente for around a $7 million fee. He’s been moved to a deeper role in midfield, but don’t be surprised to see him shifted out wide where he formed a trident with Ferreira and another U.S. international in Paul Arriola.
Sebastian Lletget, also an ex-USMNT player, has two goals in this tournament. Dallas did make a few moves during the past week by trading midfielder Edwin Cerrillo to LA Galaxy and adding former La Liga midfielder Asier Illarramendi, though the Spaniard isn’t expected to debut against Miami.

Out: Tarik Scott (season-ending injury)
Inter Miami Leagues Cup Roster, Injuries, and Betting News
Former FC Barcelona and Argentina national team manager Gerardo Martino was hired in June as head coach of Inter Miami, as many reports suggested would happen to lure Messi stateside. “Tata” Martino and Messi were together at Barcelona during the 2013-14 season and then from 2014-16 with the national team, and the Argentine manager is endeared by Messi for leading his boyhood club in Argentina, Newell’s Old Boys, to a championship in 2013.

Martino also has MLS experience, including taking Atlanta United to an MLS Cup title in 2018. He is still beloved by Atlanta fans, and one of the stars of that championship team, Josef Martinez, features in the Inter Miami forward corps.
Joining Messi in Florida are former Barcelona stars Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. The former has played nearly every minute in Miami with Messi, while the latter just made his debut. The Herons are coming off an emotional win against rival Orlando City and are four wins away from winning the club’s first trophy.
Roster
Josef Martinez has had one of the best seasons of any MLS goalscorer, and it’s only a matter of time before his numbers start to improve with the arrival of the former Barcelona contingent. Perhaps overlooked is Finnish forward Robert Taylor, who has started bagging goals and assists in these Leagues Cup encounters.
Miami also counts on 2022 MLS All-Star and Canada national team defender Kamal Miller leading the back line with the U.S. men’s national team and former Newcastle United right-back DeAndre Yedlin. Adding Alba to the mix gives Miami’s defense perhaps the most experienced in the league.
Young goalkeeper Drake Callender is the man between the sticks and a player who started receiving call-ups to the United States men’s national team prior to Messi’s arrival. Miami continues making signings, although only Alba is expected to be the immediate addition on the field for the moment.
Injuries
Out: Gregore (Lisfranc), Franco Negri (ACL), Jean Mota (LCL), Corentin Jean (ACL), Nicolas Stefanelli (leg), Ian Fray (ACL)

FC Dallas vs. Inter Miami Prediction
Miami is on a roll, and it’s hard to see the team being stopped Sunday night. FC Dallas has the home field, but the North Texas side hasn’t looked very sharp in its Leagues Cup home encounters, outscoring one of the current lousier sides in Liga MX in Necaxa before playing Charlotte FC to penalties.
Of course, the motivation will be there with a sellout to see Messi. There should be plenty of goals due to the environment, and one guy that can deliver the spectacular for Dallas is Alan Velasco.
As far as Messi’s current scoring run, there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to score, but perhaps asking for a goal within the first ten minutes for the third straight game is a bit much. He’ll want to deliver for the fans who have paid big money to see him, and he’ll get plenty of chances to score at least once.
