Geez, did I get some great response from back in the “ville” about Frank’s Bar up on route 213 in Steubenville, Ohio. Friends wanted me to pass a few things on, so here we go.
First of all, when you get to the top of the hill on that winding road you get to what is named Pleasant Hill and it is aptly named. Besides cards, Frank has movie night every Friday, and that’s the only time you can view anything as Frank has no TV on any other time.
October’s Friday Moves are as follows: This Friday, in honor of the undefeated Big Red vs. New Philly game, Frank’s at 5 p.m. (as always on Fridays) will show the move “Remember the Titans” about a high school football team in 1971. As always, there will be free popcorn and dollar beers. After the movie they will have the Big Red game on the radio and there will be fresh beer bratwurst on famous Steubenville bakery bread for only $1.50. Beer will still be a buck.
The following Friday at 5 p.m. the movie will be “Knute Rockne All American” with Ronald Reagan making his famous statement when things are down tell the boys to win one for the Gipper.
The October Friday movies end, as always, with Frank’s favorite, the 1971 movie “Brian’s Song” with the great cast of James Caan, Billy Dee Williams, Dick Butkus, Jack Warden and Shelly Fabares.
If there is a World Series game on a Friday with the Indians in it Frank will call an audible and show the movie “Major League,” another Frank’s favorite. Frank also wanted me to remember he has the same Brunswick pool table that he and I used to play on. He was glad I left town or the bar would be called Rick’s.
Frank also has the same juke box he had back in 1966 and has never changed the records. It still costs a nickel a song. One catch however is back in the 60’s Frank did not card you. Now everyone he doesn’t know gets carded as you need to be 55 and older to get in.
Last week we went 3-2-1 ATS in this column. We will move on and attack another crazy week in college football.
Saturday, Oct. 14
E. MICHIGAN +5.5 at Army: The Eagles from Ypsilanti, Mich., have a very good defense and have gone UNDER the total in all five of their games this year. This will be another one and we will also take the points as Eastern Michigan has gone 6-0 ATS after playing Toledo, who they played last weekend. EASTERN MICH/UNDER
Kansas +21 at Iowa State: Yes, Kansas stinks like the deep state but this is a must play for us as the Jayhawks catch the Cyclones in celebration mood after an unbelievable win as a +31-point dog vs. Oklahoma, in Norman to boot. Kansas played Iowa State tough last year only losing by a TD. It’s a take for us. KANSAS
Utah +13 at USC: Yes, the Trojans are in revenge mood after last year’s 31-27 loss in Salt Lake City but we will be taking the points here. The Utes are 5-0 ATS so far this year. The Trojans could get the win in what will be a much closer game than the linesmakers think. UTAH
Navy +4 at Memphis: This is a revenge game we like. The Tigers from Tennessee fell 42-28 at Annapolis a year ago and they catch Navy in a good spot coming off royal air and sea battle vs. the Air Force flyboys last Saturday. MEMPHIS
N. Mexico State -7.5 at Ga. Southern: The Eagles from Statesboro are flat out bad, going 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS this year. The Aggies from Las Cruces look to avenge last year’s 22-19 home loss. The Aggies however are playing their third straight road game so tread lightly. NEW MEXICO ST.
Boise State +7 at San Diego State: This will be a good game to take a shot with, especially on teasers. The Aztecs look to stay unbeaten and own a win over Stanford. With a win here they can run the table and finish with a perfect 12-0 record. San Diego State has gone 4-0 ATS the last four meetings with Boise and 11-0 ATS when coming off a double digit ATS win. They crushed our Rebels last week, 41-10. SAN DIEGO STATE
If you can’t make it to Frank’s just head over to your favorite race and sportsbook and pick up a few parlay cards. Take a shot at a ten team parlay, an eight team parlay and some five teamers. Bet a few ponies from our horses to watch column as you could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
Last week: 3-2-1
Season: 20-17-2
