Our Pick: Virginia Tech -3 (-110)
Boston College (4-4) had its hopes for success dashed when it lost outstanding quarterback Phil Jurkovec, the Notre Dame transfer, to a season-ending hand injury.
The Eagles have averaged a mere ten points in their current four-game losing skid. Former walk-on quarterback Dennis Grosel has registered more turnovers (seven interceptions, two fumbles) than touchdowns (six).
What’s more, BC’s normally reliable pass defense wilts before their own fans. They allow foes to complete 69.7% of their attempts inside Alumni Stadium, the 11th-worst home figure in the country.
That’s sweet music to the ears of Tech quarterback Braxton Burmeister, a junior from La Jolla, Calif., who threw for a season-best 254 yards in a 26-17 victory at Georgia Tech last weekend.
It was his third 200-yard-plus passing performance of 2021. Expect another one, in a game to be aired on ESPN2, in Chestnut Hill for the 4-4 Hokies.

Our Pick: Over 54 (-110)
Stanford (3-5) all but eliminated Oregon from the national-title picture with a 31-24 home victory over the Ducks. Oddly, however, that has been the Cardinal’s lone victory in its past five games.
Conversely, Utah has found traction since sophomore quarterback Cameron Rising replaced senior Charlie Brewer and nearly pulled off an extra-frames victory at San Diego State.
Since then, the Utes (5-3) have won four of five games, and the previous four have seen 68, 76, 56, and 68 total points scored. The key in this one, before a national FS1 audience, will be a Utah ground attack that averages 5.5 yards per run, the eighth-best in the country.
Utah has eked from a 6- to 8-point favorite, but we don’t want to mess with either side of Stanford getting more than a touchdown at home.
