St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers
Jack Flaherty (8-9, 3.34 ERA) vs. Freddy Peralta (6-4, 4.25 ERA)
First pitch: 8:10 p.m. Eastern/5:10 p.m. Pacific
TV: MLB Network
Over/Under: 8.5

There’s no denying the ascension of Flaherty. In his first full campaign a year ago, the impressive 23-year-old right-hander exhibited all the tools that could have him set as the Cardinals’ staff ace for quite awhile.

This was especially true when squaring off with Milwaukee, whom Flaherty bottled up to a 1.93 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and .173 batting average against in four starts. He also registered 13.11 K/9 in those assignments.

Overall, Flaherty logged 10.85 K/9, ranking him sixth in the National League. Considering he posted 11.65 K/9 during spring training, it’s a good bet that his penchant for strikeouts will continue. That can certainly be the case on this night, as only six teams last season struck out more than the Brewers.

The key here will be how 22-year-old Peralta fares in what will be his 15th career start. The first 14 came in 2018 (along with a pair of relief appearances) and the then-rookie enjoyed modest success, churning out a 4.25 ERA to go with 11.03 K/9. Additionally, opponents could only muster a .178 batting average with Peralta on the mound.

There is reason to believe the Dominican right-hander can reach new levels in his sophomore year. Reports coming out of spring training were that Peralta was consistently throwing harder, which is huge for a guy that relies on his fastball (77.6 percent usage!) so much.

Look for both these youngsters to provide quality work, and with two good bullpens in play also, there appears to be an under on tap at Miller Park.
