The skinny: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will be aiming to rebound in a big way in this week’s prime-time finale after suffering the most lopsided loss of his starting career.
Facts: How bad was Rodgers in last week’s 38-3 beatdown by New Orleans in Jacksonville?
Had Danica Patrick been the Packers’ QB and rocketed each of her passes into the bleachers she would have had a better passer rating than Rodgers’ 36.8. In Week 2 last season vs. Detroit, Green Bay RB Aaron Jones had an NFL week-high 168 rushing yards in its 42-21 win at Lambeau as a 6-point favorite.
New QB Jared Goff and the Lions made a spirited rally at home in coach Dan Campbell’s debut last week, cutting a 38-10 deficit to 41-33 before turning the ball over on downs in the final seconds at the San Fran 24. In the teams’ 2019 meeting at Lambeau on MNF, the Packers, as a 3-point choice, overcame a 13-0 deficit to win 23-22 on a last-second FG.
Two years earlier, also on MNF, the Lions won 30-17, but Rodgers was hurt. Bretty Hundley started. Since the Packers won 24 straight home games against the Lions from 1992-2014 (three in Milwaukee, 1992-94), Detroit has won three of the past six. Considering these teams gave up the most points in the league last week, totaling 79, maybe the over/under should be in the 50s.
Analysis: The Packers’ goal now is to become the second team in consecutive seasons to lose to the Saints in Florida 38-3 and go on to win the Super Bowl. It has been mentioned over the airwaves ad nauseum how Rodgers has a great record after losses and this should add to the win list.
As nice as that Detroit comeback was vs. San Fran, it doesn’t erase the fact 49ers WR Deebo Samuel had 189 yards on receptions and a backup RB, Elijah Mitchell, rushed for 104 yards. Enhancing the Packers chances is that the Lions’ lead running backs, D’Andre Swift (groin) and ex-Packer Jamaal Williams (chest), are both questionable. And finally, under the intense MNF spotlight, Rodgers will be making sure he shows the world his skills aren’t diminishing.
Game Forecast: Packers 31, Lions 14
Last week/season total: 10-6 ATS, 12-4 SU.
