The Memphis Grizzlies (#9 seed) will be hosting the San Antonio Spurs (#10 seed) on Wednesday 19 at 7:30 pm ET on ESPN.
The winner of this game will play the loser of the Warriors vs Lakers to see who will advance to the 2021 NBA playoffs and play Utah Jazz in the first round.
Grizzlies Vs Spurs Game Preview
Though understandably overshadowed by the extremely promising Warriors v Lakers fixture on the same day, the Play-In Tournament match-up of the Memphis Grizzlies against the San Antonio Spurs promises to be an intriguing battle of two murky teams.
The Nine-Ten game is rightly considered a game between semi-losers – teams that aren’t quite good enough for the playoffs but definitely not bad enough to miss out. With the Grizzlies and Spurs, we have exactly that.
In the Memphis corner is an inexperienced roster that’s never really figured out what to do in the big games. The Grizzlies are coming off a thrashing by Steph Curry and the Warriors – Dillon Brooks played well but was very obviously a poor nemesis for the likes of Curry, especially after fouling out at 91-91. But the Grizzlies will look on this season as one that they can be moderately proud of, taking into consideration the young age and promise of the roster.
In the San Antonio corner is a team that seems to have clocked out a month too early – they’ve won exactly twice in the last ten games and don’t cut promising figures without the injured Derrick White. Their loss to the Suns – the second in two – spoke of a team with half an eye on their contracts and another quarter on the Bahamas, but maybe that can all change for the play-offs.
What happens on Wednesday, then, is anyone’s guess. Will Jenkins’ boys bounce back from the Curry loss with a vengeance? Or will the Spurs shrug off the end-season apathy and start an incredible play-off journey? The Grizzlies will certainly be favorites, and it’s easy to imagine mercurial youngster Ja Morant tearing through the Spurs defense. But anything can happen in the play-offs (and play-ins), so let’s find out!
