Hey, I did call for a sweep!

There is no room in the NFL for a player like Tim Tebow, who is a hero in many ways.

As this bettor and handicapper was trying to find some bets for the upcoming NFL season I couldn’t help but notice all the players who have already been suspended for substance abuse (we used to call it taking dope) and domestic violence (we used to call it beating up on your wife or girl friend).

No matter what the NFL names it, the hypocrites can sweeten it up however they wish, but after all is said and done it is what it is. We have these players making crazy amounts of money in the NFL and they just can’t stop doing these things, it amazes me.

With Vic Salerno launching his new fantasy betting here in Nevada we were sitting around talking about player props and how many prop bets go on the boards during the football season.

Trying to recall the first player prop a sportsbook here in Vegas put up reminded us of William “Refrigerator” Perry. It was 1986 and I was working at the Stardust. We did not put up the prop but I believe it was the old Barbary Coast on the corner of Flamingo and the Strip who put up the William Perry TD prop for betting action in the Super Bowl between the Bears and Patriots.

As I remember, all bets were on taking 6/1 he would score a touchdown. The Bears blew out the Pats and late in the game there was a first and goal from the 1. Mike Ditka, who was coaching the Bears, is said to have been aware of the prop and brought in the “Fridge” who scored the TD. If you were at one of the books or at any of the Super Bowl parties held in Vegas back then, the places erupted and Ditka had a big smile on his face. Bears 46, Pats 10.

It was good for Perry in 1986 but not today. He is 53 years old, dead broke and may need his foot amputated. He sold his Super Bowl ring and when not living out of his car he stays at an assisted living place. Perry needs a walker to get around. He lost his millions and it is said he lives out his days drinking beer in his car and living off his social security.

My question is, with the super strong NFL and the even stronger players unions, why can’t they help these old players and also the younger ones heading in the same direction? I guess there is no TV money for things like that.

OK, I received the emails about my prediction last week in my article that this bettor thought the Cubs would go into New York and sweep the Mets. Well, I was half right as the sweep did happen but it was the Mets doing it to the Cubs in a four game series, including an old-fashion beat down Game 4, 14-3.

For those of you who emailed me, this will be my revenge. It all starts on Monday, July 18, when the Mets come to Wrigley Field for a three game series. The place will be rocking and the Cubs will get their revenge along with this bettor.

On Monday, June 27, the Mets traveled to Washington and the Nationals crushed them 11-4, 5-0 and 4-2 to sweep them. On Thursday, the Nationals travel to New York to take on the revenge-seeking Mets in a four game series. Ya think the Mets and the fans will be up for that series? This bettor will be on the Mets in all four games.

I will not predict a sweep as I have been there before but the Mets will win the series. As of Monday the Mets were five games back of the Nationals in the NL East and this will be their shot at closing the gap.

Just a few thoughts on college football, which is right around the corner. Florida State will be loaded for bear and laying 6 points in the opener vs. Ole Miss on Monday, Sept. 5. Looks like a nice bet. The game will be played at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. Lay the 6.

Alabama lost a lot of top players to the NFL draft but as always “slick” Nick (Saban) will not miss them. Their season starts with a game Sept. 3 in Arlington, Texas, at AT&T Stadium vs. Southern Cal. The line is Bama -10. On the surface it may look a little high but for this bettor I say lay the 10 as USC has a new head coach in Clay Helton and this is not a good way to start off your new job, though he did coach for 9 games last year.

I will go over some more key games in next week’s column and we will be betting the Mets. This week we could be walking around lucky and not even know it.
