SANTA ANITA
OFFSHORE: May have been over his head in the Zuma Beach. This was this 2yo’s second start coming off a win first out of the box for trainer Drysdale. He was far back in this mile turf race and launched a nice late bid, finding his best stride late. Was really flying at the end and would like to see him in a non-winners race going longer on the grass.
SUNDAR CREEK: Was getting her fourth career start and fourth different jockey. She really didn’t look like much off her last two races getting beat by a total of 27 lengths but was well bet in all three of her races. It all came together in this $20k, 7 furlong maiden race as she just crushed these horses at 11/1, winning by more than five lengths. We will be keeping an eye on this filly as she looks like a repeater at another good price.
DADTAUGHTMEWELL: May have been best in this 1-1/16 route for $16k claimers as he was pulling the jock out of the saddle but was caught down on the inside and steadied hard on the turn. Once clear he made a nice late run to pick up show dough, missing place by ¾ of a length and win by 1½. This one is in good form for this level; we will use off the claim next out.
MATRICULATE: Was dropped to his lowest level by trainer Spawr who was looking for the win; this gelding got it by 2½ lengths. He looks to have found his correct level and may find a nice starter allowance race next out.
ALLTHELEAVESRBROWN: Had a horrible trip in this $8k claimer as jockey S. Gonzalez is not on his game this meet. This gelding broke slow and was steadied when squeezed off to lose his best shot. He made a four-wide run to finish third. We will use next time out but upgraded with a jock change.
ANGEL ERIA: Was between horses in this downhill turf sprint for straight maidens and had to wait when checked off heels crossing the dirt. She was swung out for room and made a nice late finish to get up for second, missing the win by ¾ of a length. Looks like a filly who will love a flat mile on the grass. $$$
