SANTA ANITA-DEL MAR (Opens Nov. 10)

AIR POCKET: Trainer Baffert dropped this colt to his lowest level and got the easiest of wins. There were no claims in for the $25k asking price. If we see this one in a starter allowance on the grass going long we will head to the windows.

PASSION FOR PAPA: Hector Palma had two first time starters in this race. He scratched one and sent this one out, who was well bet. This filly was six wide into the first turn, five on the turn and four into the stretch, finishing third over six lengths clear of the rest.

SHEER FLATTERY: Maiden 2yo would have won on most days but was up against the highly regarded first time starter Mastery, who went off at 30-cents on the dollar. Sheer Flattery finished second but was more than nine lengths clear of the rest of his field and will be a solid single next time out. $$$$$

AVALANCHE: First time starter for trainer John Sadler was slow to find his best stride in this downhill turf sprint. He got going in the stretch and came home fast, gaining on the lone speed to miss by a half-length despite being in a tight spot late. He looks like a real nice prospect for Sadler and may want a little longer. A mile on the grass would be perfect for him next time out. $$$

FIRST HEIR: Another first time starter for trainer John Sadler who took a tough beat. This one also broke slow but got into the race early, tracked the lone speed and just missed by a neck getting up at the wire while more than eight lengths clear of the rest. Another single for us next time out. Six furlongs would be the key ticket. $$$

STUDENT BODY LEFT, KLONDIKE CREEK, PAPPOU, BEDEVILED, UNCORK THE YORK: I always look for potential key races, especially with maidens; this one could be a good one. Student Body Left, the winner despite waiting off heels on the turn, held off Klondike Creek by a head after he opened a two length lead down the lane in this mile turf race. The others fought it out for the show with Pappou taking the show dough and the even money favorite Bedeviled finishing fourth, a neck in front of Uncork the York.
