HOLLYWOOD PARK
LOW GEAR POWER: First off the claim for trainer Jeff Mullins, this gelding powered down the lane and won going away against this very tough group of 10k claimers. Look for Mullins to give this guy a boast in class and get back to back wins. $$$$$
AKKADIAN: Broke slow in this 1 1/16 turf route and was way back in last. At the top of the stretch he made a huge late run under Martin Garcia picking up the place. Just missed the win by a half length in what was an outstanding effort. Upgrade horses that Martin Garcia rides as he is on a tear since trainer Bob Baffert gave him his walking papers.
KALK BAY: Was last seen running up the track at Del Mar last summer. She came back in this 16k claimer for Mike Mitchell and won in a romp. Should be able to move up and repeat.
ADDITIONAL DEMANDS: First time starter stumbled at the start and lost his best shot. Made a nice four wide run down the lane to finish a clear third. He will go much better in his second start.
GUIDOPANZINI: Another who was last seen running up the track at Del Mar last summer He looked to be in very tough and was let go at 14-1. Showed good early speed and cruised home to win by more than five lengths in a very impressive effort off the layoff for trainer Peter Miller.
GIANT STEPS: Was in from Golden Gate for trainer Morey and just ran super, gaining on the chalk with every stride down the lane. Came up short, but was more than eight lengths clear of the field. He is in top form. A must use first and second next time out.
GOLDEN GATE
CARDIFFBYTHESEA: Just the name makes you feel good. This first time starter out of the Lloyd Mason barn won like a good thing. Drew down the lane under a tight hold and hand ride with plenty left in the tank. He will come back and repeat. $$$$$
TRAPPERS REWARD: May have been best in here, but just had a horrible trip when cut off nearing mid-stretch and lost his chance. Was coming again late and just missed the place by a nostril. $$$
HEROICALLY: Consistent horse just missed by a head in here and was claimed by the very capable Mike Chambers who will find the perfect spot for the win next time out.
