UNDRAFTED: Ran on opening day the day Rosario had four winners. He rode this one in the first division of the Oceanside Stakes and gave him a horrible trip. He had to wait off heels when down on inside on the second turn. Came out for room, but got in tight again off heels in midstretch. Was just out-finished and ended up fourth, beaten a length and a half.
ROOKIE SENSATION: Was exiting our HTW list and getting off at 14-1 in this 1-1/16 route. It was time to jump in. Made an eye catching four wide run into the stretch and looked to run by the 2-1 chalk. Just failed by a neck. We will keep this up and comer on our list.
MAGIC CHANNEL: Was in from over the pond for trainer Mike Mitchell and looked beaten at the top of the stretch sitting next to last. He made a determined late run and got up to win by 3/4 of a length. This one looks to have a bright future here for Mitchell.
GLOBAL VIEW: First time starter was just getting the feel of it in this 5½ furlong sprint. This 2yo colt who is sired by Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) out of the dam Egyptian Queen (Storm Cat) is bred to be something special and the longer the better. We will be all over him next out if he goes longer. $$$$$
JOEANDBETTY’SBABY: Just got a horrible ride by jockey Espinoza who sat back last and then made a five wide run late to miss by a neck. She was claimed by trainer Doug O’Neill for 40k. Looks to be a real good claim and we know Espinoza will not be on her next time out.
HUMOR ME: Was coming off the layoff for trainer Bob Baffert. Won the race with the odds on first time starter Socialbug, who went off at .50 cents on the dollar. Humor Me was not going to beat the bug but may have finished second. She hopped and tossed her head in what was an awkward start losing any shot she had. We will give her a big shot to redeem herself next time out.
SOUTHERN SUNSHINE: First time starter for Peter Miller took all the money and was sent off at 6-5. She was bumped at the start, swung wide into the stretch which was not the place to be in this 5-1/2furlong sprint. She finished fourth, missing the show by a neck and the place by 3/4 of a length. Next time we will see her in the winner’s circle. $$$
COSMIC HEAT: Was a clear winner in this race at 6-1 but the all-knowing stewards took his number down for what they said was interference in late stretch when the third place finisher never got to an opening on time. A questionable takedown to say the least and the winner who was 28-1 just happened to trigger a pick six carryover. I hope the stewards get a little bonus check in the mail for their day light robbery in front of us very unhappy horse bettors who just want a fair shake.
