RIVERS RUN DEEP: Cody Autrey first time starter stormed home to beat the odds on John Sadler runner who was sent off at .60 cents on the dollar. This colt broke slow and down on the inside. Made a big four wide run down the lane and drew away late in a very impressive turn of foot. This colt can flat out run. Don’t know if Autrey will take him back East after Del Mar but we will watch for his return.
KIMJET: Took a big shot with this 2yo going 7 furlongs as he was let go at 17/1. He chased off the rail and came out into the stretch to make his run. Was gaining on the 3/1 winner with every stride but came up short by a head while between horses on the line. He is improving leaps and bounds. Ready to pop!
GRAZENETTE: First time starter for trainer Mike Mitchell broke slow down on the inside. She settled nicely in this 5 ½ furlong 50k maiden sprint and looked ready to make her run. Came out for the drive and ran on with good energy picking up the show money. This filly ran like she wants longer, so if she gets 6 furlongs or more next time out we will be digging deep and heading to the betting windows. $$$$$
GULSARY: Irish import was making her stateside debut and her first race since last November. She looked good in the track and was taking some money. Jockey Gary Stevens must have had instructions to take hold of her as she looked like he was pulled out of the saddle. Settled in the back of the pack in this nine horse field turning for home. Was last and then unleashed a powerful run down the lane to finish fourth in what was a set up for something bigger. We will follow as this filly has the looks of one sneaky girl. $$$
BEACHCOMBING: The Beachcombing is over at Del Mar but not for this claimer who most likely will show up at Santa Anita on the grass. He may have been best in this race but just did not get the trip from Joe Talamo who wasn’t the same at Del Mar after blowing the riding title at Hollywood Park. Look for Joe to come back strong at Santa Anita and get the win on this one next time out.
SCHERZINGER: This Jerry Hollendorfer comebacker making her 3yo debut after running third in her last start as a 2yo at Santa Anita back in December. Came back ready to roll in this maiden special race with Mike Smith in the irons. She made quick work of these fillies winning going away by 1½. Looks like she has really grown and matured. One to follow at Santa Anita.
COLONEL JOAN: Made a huge late run at 17/1 in this mile race for 2yo filly straight maidens, storming home from ninth to second by a head and passed the winner like a flash just beyond the wire. She will be very hard to beat next time out.
GELILA: Ran big in this race after showing little in her last start. She was closing in on the winner late and looks ready to score next time out for trainer Rafael DeLeon.
