SANTA ANITA

ROSICKY: First time starter out of the barn of Carla Gaines made a huge eye-popping, four-wide run turning for home and came like a flash down the lane to just miss nipping the 2/1 lone speed on the line. This colt will be a good single next time out.

MOANIN: If you get a chance, watch the replay of this race. Moanin had the nightmare trip. She was steadied, bumped and squeezed off at the start. She angled in but had to be steadied again down on the rail. Once clear she showed great heart, surging late to finish second just a half-length behind the even money winner. $$$$$

HE’S A REAL KEEPER/SALT OF THE EARTH: This was just another example of two horses exiting the same race. These two were coming out of a race in which they finished fifth and sixth. In this race they finished first and second with He’s a Real Keeper winning and paying $35. Salt of the Earth paid $32.20 to place keying a $385.80 exacta for a $1 bet.

PRIZE EXHIBIT: Just loved this filly in this 1-1/8 turf route. She broke slow and was steadied between horses into the second turn. Checked off heels leaving that turn cost her a ton of ground, but she got clear and rallied late to finish fourth. We will be on her next time out hoping to find some pace to run at.

HALF PAST MIDNIGHT: I talked about this first time starter for trainer Phil D’Amato at the Paddock seminar with Tom Quigley on Santa Anita Derby day. Used her in my exactas and tri’s. This filly looked to be making a nice run at almost 15/1 when she was steadied off heels. Was switched out and came home strong to just miss second by a dwindling nostril.

GIMME DA LUTE: Blasted home at even money for trainer Bob Baffert and after the race part-owner Mike Pegram said he is a good one. We think so, Mike.

ANXIOUS TIMES: Liked this one on Santa Anita Derby day but he just didn’t get the trip I anticipated and finished fourth, missing the show by a nose. We will give him another shot.

SCANDAL: Thought this filly could be singled in the players pick five and did on one ticket. Got the bad Mike Smith ride as she was steadied hard off heels nearing the quarter pole and again into the stretch, costing her any shot she had left. She closed strong, just missing the place by a head. No mistakes next time out. $$$
