SANTA ANITA

MAP ROOM: First time starter for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer had been working hard heading into his debut going down the hill. A storm came and the race was taken off the grass. Showed some good early speed and ran a much better than looked third while stuck inside on this wet course. Was a clear third and will be a great play next time out on the grass.

SPANISH HOMBRE: First time starter for trainer Phil D’Amato broke slowly and then was steadied hard when squeezed off. He made a four-wide run into the stretch of this 5½ furlong sprint to get the show dough while almost three lengths clear of the fourth place finisher. A very good effort by a first time starter who could have packed it in. Would love to see this one going a little longer next time out. $$$

BEACH PATROL: Maiden started his career at the Fair Grounds under the care of Wayne Catalano. Had two races going long on the grass, producing a second and a third. Showed up in this straight maiden, mile turf race after being moved to the barn of Phil D’Amato. Was sent off as the 7/5 favorite. Bettors knew what they were doing as he won clear by almost four lengths. Will back him again next out versus winners.

TRISTAN’S TRILOGY: Would have won on any other day going a mile on the grass but ran into Beach Patrol. We took this one at 7/1 and he looked to have a big shot down the lane but the winner was just too much. Did finish second 6½ lengths clear of the third place finisher in this field of 12. Will be one tough customer next time out on the grass.

ABETS ABET: Looked good in this spot running for a $10k price tag. She wanted to be let loose in this mile dirt race but the jockey took hold. She got in a tight spot and had to check. Went wide into the stretch and had little to offer down the lane. Moves into a new barn and we will take a shot with her next out.

STREET SWEETS: First time starter hesitated at the break to be dead last and look hopelessly beaten. She moved up on the rail and then came four wide into the stretch. Was flying late to get up for second in a big effort for this 3yo filly. Will be singling next time out. $$$$$
