Fairplex at Los Alamitos, Santa Anita

HOOTIE: Was coming off the layoff for trainer Mike McCarthy and ran a big race going 1-1/16 on the grass despite a wide trip and losing ground. He kept to his task to get up for the show dough. This race will have him set for the Santa Anita grass.

INCENSED: Was coming off a freshening for Peter Miller and going five furlongs on the grass course at Del Mar. He was very anxious to run and fractious in the gate. Made a big four-wide run to get up for second, just missing the win by a half-length. This race will have him perfectly set up for a trip down the hill when Santa Anita opens Sept. 28. $$$

EXCAVATION: Ran a much better-than-looked fourth in this 1-1/16 turf route. He split horses on the turn but had to angle to the inside, losing a position. Kept going down on the rail to just miss third by a dwindling ¾ of a length. Could be a nice price play next time out.

LUCKY ROMANO: Really sparked up here when blinkers went on as he crushed this field by more than eight lengths while under a hard hold late. We could see this one at the short Fairplex meet at Los Al. If so, will be singling him in the picks. $$$$$

HIGH DRAMA: Baffert first timer ran like she wanted longer and will get it when Santa Anita opens. If she goes six furlongs or longer just go to the window and take your best shot. $$$$$

SHEZA CHATTYKAT: Took a horrible beat here when caught on the line by a filly named Swirling, who was exiting our HTW list and sent out on our HTW alerts at www.gamingtoday.com. Swirling paid $20 for our HTW followers getting up late to win by a neck. Sheza had the lead and just got caught but will redeem herself going down the hill at Santa Anita. $$$

TWISTED ROSIE: What a race this filly ran here as she stumbled at the start and had to fall back. Went up between horses to stalk the pace but had to wait for room leaving the turn. She came out in upper stretch in this 5½ furlong sprint and rallied to get up for the impossible win going away. A big time effort for this filly to break her maiden.
