BASMATI: Was exiting our HTW list and ran a winning race but had the misfortune of meeting up with another Bob Baffert first-time starter who went wire-to-wire. Basmati was more than five-lengths clear of the rest. We will keep him on our list.

DEARLY CONCERNED: Was between horses in the early going and got in tight when down on the inside. She came out for room into the stretch but had to be checked hard when lacking any running room. Was checked repeatedly until midstretch when she finally got clear. Finished strong to miss by a nostril in a top notch effort. This girl will be a good single next time out for her new connections. $$$$$

TIMES GONE BY: Actually lost this race at the start when getting pinballed in the early going. Made a wide run around both turns and came home strong, just missing the place by a nose.

DEVOUR: Was coming out of the 1 post and was hemmed in down on the inside. Split horses leaving the turn and came wide down the lane. Closed fast, but missed by less than a length. This guy was claimed at Del Mar by Mike Mitchell who knows the game better than most. $$$

DEPUTIFORMER: Was in from Lone Star for trainer Dallas Keen. This turf specialist was trying the synthetic surface and ran a good race finishing third. Claimed by trainer Jeff Mullins, who will send him to the grass in his next start. If so we will bet.

IWANNAIWANNAIWANNA: Churchill Downs shipper who was one of many trying to take advantage of the extra purse money ran a winning race, but trouble cost him. He was another pick up via the claim box, but this pick up looks like a good one.

A RACING DELIGHT: Bobbled at the start and was dead last until the top of the stretch when unleashing a big closing run. Finished four wide on the line in a four horse blanket photo ending up third. Nice try for this first time starter.

KALK BAY: Ran a big race when breaking her maiden for 30k. She was claimed out of this good effort. Could come right back and repeat against winners.

DEL SIETE LEGUAS: This guy was claimed by trainer Ron Ellis off a trip that was (too say the least) crummy. Jockey Gomez had him all over the track and he still finished a close third. He wins with a clean trip next time out.

SAFE WORD: Just loved this filly, but she got in tight early and between horses. Had to be steadied hard and was forced out on the turn. Continued wide and just could not mount the necessary rally.

PANETTONE: First time starter was steadied at the start but slowly moved up into contention in this 12 horse field of straight maidens. Came three deep into the stretch and stormed home for the big win.

SOLAR WIND: This first time starter for trainer John Sadler and not Bob Baffert looks like a monster in the making. She toyed with this good field and drew away down the lane. Could be running in a stakes race next time out.
